importing my contacts turned out to be tricky. i tried everything without success (bluetooth, some strange cli tool, swearing). in the end i "restored" a backup of my old phone. but just as i was about to rant here, how ridiculously difficult jolla had made it, i found the canonical way:
Settings -> Apps -> Contact: import from file
i'm not really used to the jolla setup of dividing the setting screen into tabs ...
but now all my contacts have been moved. let's see what's next ...

I copied all my files from my old phone to my computer and from there to the new phone. sailfish os permits a "developer mode" where you enable ssh login, to set an ip address for a usb-connection and a password for the default user, who conveniently is called
defaultuser
since some os versions back. so the phone doesn't show up as a file storage but has a network connection via usb once you connect it to your computer. and this makes it possible to work with tools like rsync when copying data from and onto the phones connected. i had to install rsync on the jolla2026 (and less, and vim) and then the error messages at the beginning of copying onto the phone disappeared. (i couldn't believe the error msg at first:
bash: rsync not found
. what does that even mean?).
I had bought a 500g sd card for the phone, prepared it on my computer (partition, format ext4 without journal) and inserted it in the phone afterwards. it worked quite well unti i noticed that the card was mounted with root rights. so writing on it as the defaultuser didn't work, permission denied. since it is meant to store data for the defaultuser this was inconvenient. after some trials and errors i found that the canonical way for sailfish was to insert a partitioned sd card and let sailfish format it. it will add all the directories needed for android and the card itsself will be mounted with the correct permissions for the defaultuser.
i tried to set up ssh for passwordless key access. this was working in the beginning. but after some time i was asked to give the password again. i'm now trying to figure out where there are logs on the system i can use for debugging (journalctl doesn't show anything regarding logins and ssh).
i try to find out how to transfer whatsapp and signal to the new phone. i'd like to get rid of whatsapp but i don't like to get rid of the people i use whatsapp to contact with. (they are the immune rest of my acquaintances that i couldn't convice to switch to signal.) i think i found a way to do this but i dimly remember that last time i was quite surprized how badly this worked. and, of course, i do not remember what i did last time to make it work. but i do remember i had wanted to write it down somewhere ...
the phone might be ready as of tomorrow ... :-)

the last bit went much smoother than expected. whatsapp could be transferred by copying all the data from the old phone, then installing whatsapp on the new one and getting some id to transfer the account to the new one. signal wanted a confirmation on the old one and then restored all communication out of a backupfile i had created before. even the db-navigator finally showed my deutschlandticket. i just had to remove the ticket from the old phone and add it to the app on the new one. so it was two days work to get my new phone set up in the way i like it. no bloatware, i am able to work with ssh, and all my data belongs to me, not counting the stuff whatsapp has already siphoned off of my phone ... but who is counting anyway?
