Ruth2 v4, Roth2 v2 and the other bodies in the Ruth2 and Roth2 families that support Bakes-on-Mesh were made to be compatible with layer content made for the system body. Most of it was made before there was mesh. This includes layer clothes with one limitation: Layer clothes cannot deform a BoM-enabled mesh body. For example, classic layer bell-bottom jeans that widen the legs of the system body become skin-tight jeggings when worn on a BoM mesh body.

Generally, layer clothes are widely considered outdated ever since OpenSim was flooded with mesh clothes pirated from Second Life from 2015 on. Between the removal of system-layer-compatible "onion layers" around early mesh bodies and the introduction of BoM, it wasn't possible to wear them anyway. Now that BoM exists, they have their place because they have their advantages.

Advantages of layer clothes over mesh clothes

They can be worn underneath everything

One big advantage is that they don't need space, and they don't clip through mesh clothes unless the body already clips through these mesh clothes.

For example, it's impossible to wear mesh tights under most mesh skirts or dresses from Second Life. That's because they're directly built onto the skin of the mesh body underneath. There is no room for mesh tights between the mesh body and the skirt or the dress. Tights would mercilessly clip through the skirt or the dress. Some of them can even only be worn with one specific type of mesh underwear or none at all because they leave no room with it, because they absolutely have to be skin-tight all over. Other skirts or dresses have underwear built in so that the skirt or the dress can be made as tight as possible.

At the same time, it's next to impossible to wear mesh tights and mesh underwear at the same time. Both are skin-tight, built directly onto the mesh body. There is no room for mesh underwear under mesh tights, and there is no room for mesh tights under mesh underwear. Even if there was, there are hardly any skirts or dresses with room for both mesh underwear and mesh tights which leave room for each other.

Layer clothes, in stark contrast, have no thickness. They don't need any room. You can wear layer underwear or lingerie under any skirt or dress or pair of shorts or whatever. You can wear layer tights under any skirt or dress or pair of shorts or whatever. Depending on how layer underwear and layer tights are defined, you can wear them underneath each other. In fact, if underpants and tights are both defined as underpants, and you have a BoM body, you can choose whether you wear the actual underpants over or underneath the tights.

With layer clothes and Bakes-on-Mesh allowing for many more layers, you can wear tights over underwear, then a pair of skin-tight Capri leggings over the tights, then a skirt over the leggings and then even a pair of layer socks over the tights.

If you go to the beach, at least with a female avatar, you can wear your swimwear under your other clothes right away.

Never accidentally naked

The second advantage of layer clothes is that if you wear them, you're never seen without them. Your avatar is not rendered with only the skin textures on the body before underwear or swimwear textures or so are rendered over the skin textures. All layer textures are baked together first, then they are displayed. As long as the baking isn't done yet, your mesh body remains grey.

If all that you wear is mesh attachments, it may occur to you that you arrive at a busy party butt-naked, either because your mesh clothes take significantly longer to rez than your mesh body, or because all your mesh attachments take too long to rez. If you wear layer underwear underneath, this won't happen. Whatever meshes may not rez immediately, you've always got your layer underwear on.

One size fits all

The third advantage is that layer clothes are not made to fit one specific body. They can "adapt" to any mesh body out there because they have no virtual physical shape of their own; instead, they are literally painted onto the skin.

This means that any new mesh body that supports BoM has skin-tight clothes like underwear, swimwear, hosiery etc. readily available right now. There is no need to wait for someone to make such clothes in mesh specifically for that particular body. You can simply wear already existing layer clothes. This, by the way, is still the only chance you have to wear underwear, swimwear, hosiery etc. on Ruth2 v4 and Roth2 v2. For these bodies, such clothes simply don't exist in mesh.

It only gets a bit trickier for male avatars on beaches. That's because male mesh bodies do not have the same adjustable crotch bulge as the system body. There is a pair of swim trunks, though, that comes with a sculpty bulge attachment for the crotch; I'm going to post one or two locations where you can find it. If you have loose textures for your swimwear, you can apply them to copies of this bulge, adjust them so they fit as seamlessly as you can get them to fit, and your male avatar looks much more "male" in swimwear.

Food for thought: You can even wear women's swimwear or lingerie on a male mesh body with no significant problems. And vice versa.

No extra complexity

The fourth and last advantage is: No matter how many pieces of layer clothing your avatar wears, they don't increase the avatar rendering complexity. They don't attach any additional objects to your avatar, and so they don't add any vertices or surfaces.
