You may have experienced this: To convert you to vegetarism, you're being offered ersatz products (sausages made of soy, "meat" out of wheat gluten, soy milk..). These products have two things in common:
- They are shamelessly overpriced
- They taste like cardboard smothered in seasoning and won't be even close to the taste of meat
On the other hand, there are delicious vegetarian dishes which don't employ such ersatz stuff - they are very tasty on their own and I - as a omnivore - have to known to prefer them to the meat dish, because they are so good!
What has this do to with the Fediverse/Google+? There people having to migrate from G+ (or other networks), there themes which aspire to give a similar look&feel to G+, yet they are - like soy sausage - only a feeble ersatz and people leave dissatisfied. The right strategy to counter this would be - instead of trying to give them an ersatz G+ - to show them the strength, the opportunities, the real taste (so to speak) of the Fediverse to show them what's really possible. They might reject this, of course, but at least they are being shown a real alternative - not some ersatz glamour of the network they know. In my opinion this is much more fair and won't leave people disillusioned.
