A note to my fellow leftists: Kanefield's blog post is in my opinion an important read, but it isn't a gentle read, and I'm not sure that I agree with everything she says. I think the best response is to resist knee-jerk reactions and where things feel hard to either quietly walk away or to to sit with what she says.

Looks like she'll be doing a different kind of writing, going forward, focusing on the history of political thought.

"As I came to understand what I called the left-wing misinformation-outrage cycle and saw some of the misinformation spilling into mainstream media, I wrote this series. I discovered that trying to tamp down rage and misinformation is a fool’s game. The formula is too effective. Trying to tamp down what I call rage-inducing simplifications is like trying to put out forest fires with a squirt gun. It is like playing whack-a-mole. Deal with one bit of misinformation and two more pop up."

I'm glad that she's back, but I'm anxious that I may end up missing her past writing. She might not have succeeded in tamping down the rage cycle, but a lot of her posts had a calming effect on me, and I think helped me to think more clearly.

Interested to see what she has to say, in any case.
