Yes, all that I said over there does apply.
As for the Feuerzangenbowle / Firetongue Bowl movie I do enjoy it. I think it is good entertainment, and even in such bad times people need to live a life. There is sadness, happiness all the like. I think damning everything would be going a bit overboard.
What spoils the movie for me in so far that I will not attend any public showings now that I know who gets the royalties. We have been owning the DVD since a long time, so that harm is done. At least we can watch that as much as we like. :)
I do not want to compare both systems, but I grew up in West Germany and moved to Leipzig, East Germany, not too long after the reunification. I experienced first hand that there are many bad, but also many positive memories. Children's literature and media were quite strong, and people still love Gerhard Schöne's children's songs, Reinhard Lakomy's awesome Geschichtenlieder. I grew up with the East German Sandmännchen and still think it is an outstanding example of TV for children. Yes, did contain some propaganda elements, but I think it is also a very good and still valid example for how to create for children, though the styles will certainly need some adaption. (Though I do not really warm to the modern Sandmännchen, I love that the old one is slow and both embedded into reality and phantasy.)
For me I also differentiate if something is a joint work of many, or if something is mainly created by one person.
But as I said, one needs to acknowledge that even the bleakest times can create something positive. That will inevitably be embedded in it's time, but one can also learn from the context.
