Some of the most fervent technology hating luddites I've seen has been total nerds.
Seems like half of the folks in an anarcho-primitivist camp back in the days worked as programmers.
Like folks were tanning hides and talking about how PHP totally sucks.

I'm a nerd about hosting my servers and using open source software, but I shock people around me when I tell them that I ain't got Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or whatever mainstream social networks you can name. I do have LinkedIn, but only to have a public profile that people can search.
My smartphone is also stripped to the bearbones minimum of what I need to live in a digital society.
And it's exactly because I'm an IT guy and I know what's shady, that I stay away from it.

We've found, anecdotally, that the most vocal and well reasoned arguments against including computers anywhere at all, come from programmers, engineers, and others you may consider "experts".
We know exactly how fragile and Bad these systems are, and have no illusions as to how easily they can, will, and do collapse entirely.

More than 15 years ago I installed Linux and messed around a lot on the computer. It opened up many opportunities in using a computer. Now, with no time to dedicate time to IT, I occasionally require the service of the hospital's IT specialist. For me, computing is not an end like it is for some Nerds. My purpose is clinical microbiology and I use a tool that requires maintenance by a specialist.

decades ago, when there were the first discussions about voting computers in germany i had serious discussions about them with self acclaimed conservative folks. they were all in favour of these computers, automatic counting, automatic data transmission. only seconds after the ballots were closed the results would be known. what tremendous progress compared to then when we had to wait 4 hours to get a result. i argued against them: too insecure, too easily manipulated, impossible to control, no recounting possible. this was all dismissed by my conservative discussion partners: fear mongering, anti-tech-zeal, enemy of progress, green-eco partisan. until the german computer society CCC did manage to hack a voting machine and do all the things mentioned. then many conservatives became mad and quite confused; facts were against them. how could computer enthusiasts like the guys from the CCC could sabotage the ideas of computers? most people in these discussions didn't like my reply back then: because they know how computers work and what can be done with them!

I was so excited by computers in the 80s and 90s, but dislike the way they've evolved. Constant updates, too much marketing, the costs, hackers and scammers, viruses, the internet (really, the misinformation and abuse). It makes me long for the days of typewriters, fax machines, snail mail and wired telephones.

jokes aside, the more one knows and desires to use the capabilities of modern computing, the more they're aware of the drawbacks. You'll find people on here who work on all computer things from infrastructure to minor patches to software application plugins. This, in essence, refers to a deeply distributed network of producers whose desire to use computers doesn't trump their economical and social awareness.

My Dad was struggling to understand today, when I said, that if he starts typing an email on his mobile, he can view the 'draft' on his laptop.
When I mentioned, it's because it's saved "in the cloud", he pointed to a cloud in the sky, out the window.
I said, "Yes, that one".
He asked what happened if that cloud developed into a raincloud and disappears by soaking the ground, I said, "Well that's your data going down the drain".

Not completely gone, but definitely limited. My number one issue being "No voting by computer". To be trusted, the voting process must be transparent and understandable by most people, not just the ones who can check the software.
Inconvenience never outweighs this.

I worked elections when the voting machines first came out to understand them and how they were being used. They're basically just vote talliers and there is a full paper trail.

This hit me yesterday... I think tech peaked in the late 90s and early 00s but the before and after is very different... Technology was growing until then and just getting better but somewhere in the late 00s and especially 10s we saw that technology hijacked and diluted for short term profit. There are so many cool projects people here on Mastodon are working on... Things very worthy of the 90s/00s but a lack of interest from, let's say "management". Things that the world genuinely wants but will never get to see because corporate mentality sees too much investment and too long for returns when they can just slap an AI sticker on whatever they are already doing and market the hell out of the thing that no one really wants.... Or just sneakily collect data and sell it for a huge profit.
That got a little more ranty then I intended ?

Ha, been using computers since punched cards on IBM 360 in 1970’s, then TRS-80, Atari 800, Apple II, IBM PC’s. Worked at Bell Labs in 1980’s, loved Unix & now get my Unix “fix” on macOS every day. iPhone indispensable to daily life, on it every day in retirement as I work on converting my 26 years of film photos to digital. Mac hardware great for photo & video work, world would be horrible without computers & photos stored in a shoebox ?

the more you know how the sausage is made the less you want to eat it.
I recall when I was an undergrad student a postdoctoral researcher deciding that he'd had enough of it , packed it up, and became a postman in a rural area, and made goats cheese. The last I heard from him was he was still there, happily living off the land and still had no computers in his home.
Personally, I write firmware for a living, but don't want to see a computer at home.

It was fun at the beginning when you could do just the cool shit. But now there are too many hindrances to do anything. Simple things like hosting a web server for a few friends can't be done without having to use Let's Encrypt. You can't boot from a custom kernel without either signing it (whaaaaat?) or disabling secure boot. I could write an IRC or NNTP bot in an afternoon, good luck doing the same with Discord and Reddit. Everything is an enterprise owned platform. It's so dull...

Yeah I was going to say that computers aren't the problem, how they're programmed by some is the issue. Sometimes it's the programmer themselves (lazy attitude towards making the code robust), sometimes it's management (I need it yesterday - no, I don't care if it's not ready), and sometimes the top person (we want engagement, engagement, engagement). GIGO.

I would say this differently: In the Internet 1 it was controlled by technicians, universities, nerds and experts. That Internet 1 was a wonderful place.
Then the internet was invaded by lawyers, corporations, governmets and last but not least sociopaths. Now the internet is a shit hole.

I think we see a wider picture here, one we are not too bothered if people don't show up on a regular basis and post, people are not obsessed sharing every aspect of their lives and following people that do . When an instance goes down or we can't access it (it happens, sometimes planned other times unplanned) we just ssem to carry on with our lives till it is fixed.
So we are probably more resiliant and able to see that wider picture of what happens when IT goes mega wrong like with cloudstrike, I wonder how many Mastodon users carry cash just in case.
Not sure if we would be better off without tech, I think we see a picture in a world obsessed with AI and its so called potential, we here, pick up on how bad AI is in terms of what it puts out at times and question is AI as good as the propoganda claims.
