MtG story from 1993 to (roughly) 2009 took thousands of years in-universe, but MtG story from 2009 to 2023 only took about three or four (!) years in-universe, which bothers me a lot. Can we expect bigger time skips in the future again or did we stuck in the timeline where in-universe time flows much slower than our own time?..It’s about 6 years in-universe time (Alara was 4556 and MOM was 4562) but not too far off.
The amount of time that passed early in Magic’s story was a mistake, IMO. Most of it was just trying to make sense of what came before they tried to make a coherent continuity internally. There’s a reason why like half the characters on Dominaria have one contrived immortality or another. We also had the block structure until five years ago, which slowed things down because we only essentially had one story a year.
I can’t talk specifics about the future but Magic is tied to the release schedule, and so in-universe time will need to move slow enough to have coherent arcs, but without the block structure there’s nothing to say smaller time skips aren’t possible.
