And when you decide that it's much easier to add the #Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost filter-triggering hashtags and, if it's a post, a Mastodon-style long-post content warning in the summary.

to be honest i don't even think the rest of microblog fedi tries to appease masto users with regards to long posts

even masto's own forks like glitch-soc have support for significantly higher character limits, and that's not even mentioning instance software that's not a masto fork, like pleroma or misskey (i guess iceshrimp.net as well but that's still in development)

@NorVegan It's basically what Mastodon perceives as a content warning, but done on something that's very much not Mastodon.

On Hubzilla, it goes into the summary field.

A "Mastodon-style long-post content warning" is e.g. when you write into your summary field, "CW: long post (over 2,400 characters)". To Mastodon users, it appears like a genuine content warning that warns them about the post being over 2,400 characters long, i.e. over 1,900 characters longer than Mastodon's hard-coded 500-character limit and potentially over 1,900 characters longer than what they'd tolerate. And it hides that way-over-500-character "wall of text" until they click the content warning.

@Christophorus (streams) Still, the majority of Mastodon instances is limited to 500 characters.

Most Mastodon users got to know the Fediverse as nothing but a Twitter replacement microblogging network with no more than 500 characters. That's what they got used to. They shat bricks into their pants when they came across their first post with over 500 characters.

There are Mastodon users who demand the whole Fediverse be hard-limited to 500 characters.

There are even more Mastodon users who will complain when you post over 500 characters, regardless of where you are. People have actually complained to me for posting over 500 characters multiple times.

And there are even more Mastodon users who will silently mute or outright block anyone who posts over 500 characters upon first strike.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mastodon users asked their instance admins to block either you or your home hub instance-wide for behaving in such an unabashedly "un-Mastodon-like" way.

By the way, the official Mastodon mobile app can't fold longer posts in. You post 20,000 characters, and that app will slam these 20,000 characters into people's faces as one enormous wall of text.

@NorVegan Not through the comments section field AFAIK. You can't change the permissions of a comment from those of the start post, and a DM is a change in permissions.

This only works for changing a new post into a DM.
