It's sometimes recommended to issue a #
ContentWarning
on #
LongPosts
("CW: long").
But where do long posts start? When does "CW: long" become necessary?

I don't think "CW: Long" is complete nonsense, but I also don't see the point of it for most platforms, which will display a truncated version with option to expand.

It might have originated through simpler Mastodon apps that can't fold longer posts because the dev only knew Mastodon and couldn't imagine that "toots" over 500 characters are even possible.
But it's there.

some just show the first line and when there is just content warning you don't know what is written or what it is about. I have this on my other mastodon account.
So it is nonsense just practically.
On the other side if you write 10 000 characters then it will be cut anyway after 500 for the most.
So wouldn't make difference. If it is content that has interest it will be read. If it is not of interest and boring they scroll anyway further.
I would say it is as always in social media. Try to write like a journalist and put the most important in the first thrid with the message you want to transport. If it is interesting enough the second part with details will be read and it will be read to the end where you write what other you have to offer.
Very simple way like in every newspaper.
.If you don't have to say anything then you write meme and aphorism. lol
If you have to say something then novels will be read.

here a screenshot how your post looks on another account. Just first line to see. Impossible to know that you made a polling post

This isn't true.
I regularly write posts with thousands of characters. They always show up on Mastodon at their full length. People actually complain about my way-over-500-characters posts.
Mastodon cuts alt-text. But it does not cut posts.

will be dependent how the mastodon server is configured.
First when you see the post I see your posts on all mastodon accounts cut. Have to click on it to see full posting.

But you can still expand it to its full length. It is not cut permanently. Mastodon doesn't do that.

Your Mastodon instance will stop you from entering a longer post by flagging it with a red number that indicates how far over the limit you are. Other servers like Pleroma allow longer posts.

Yes, but when I write a post with 10,000 characters for Hubzilla, then Hubzilla will let me post all 10,000 characters, and Mastodon will take over all 10,000 characters. Most frontends will fold them so that there's no 10,000-characters wall of text on people's timelines. Mastodon does not permanently cut 9,500 characters off.

Correct. A really good instance like berserker.town will let you post significantly more.
