i dare to do some advertising for one of my favourite festivals here in berlin, in the knowledge that nobody here will read this and so it won't become more clogged than it already is.
for those people who happen to be in berlin until end of july there is a great way to spend weekends here: the concerts at the HKW (Haus der Kulturen der Welt), aka Schwangere Auster (pregnant oyster). the festival "wassermusik" has concerts during the weekends on friday and saturday evening. this year's motto is "black atlantic", meaning to illustrate the musical influence between africa and south america.
the concerts (two each evening) take place on the HKW's roof, and are relatively cheap. i missed the concert last sunday with gilberto gil (sunday! bah, i was focused on friday and saturday). but he rest of the concerts will all happen on friday and saturday evenings.
i had the possibility to be at the concerts of "filles de illighadad" and "maravillas de mali". both were fantastic but the "filles de illighadad" were extremely surprising: traditional touareg music sung by women, with additional guitars ("future touareg music"). the guitars sounded a little like fela kuti or king sunny adé and also reminded me of the new-wave-rai from algeria i knew in the mid 80s.
i have never seen a bad concert during this festival, the worst were "quite ok", the best "totally stunning" (e.g. the "meridian brothers" several years ago).
it starts at 19:00 and ends at 22:00.
