I realise Discord is a good fit for Microsoft's gaming business, and the reality is when any Internet service becomes big enough, it is very attractive to sell it off for a fortune. But we probably need to remember that Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc are not spending millions or billions of Dollars from the goodness of their hearts... there is a wealth of metadata, personalised advertising revenue, etc at stake.
It's such a pity as in most cases innovation and privacy goes out of the window with these takeovers, but I can sympathise with the creators of the service as the money is tempting, and they usually don't want to spend 100% of time trying to administer a massive service.
