Conventional wisdom is that servers in data centers are much more energy efficient than home computers, and that newer computers are more energy efficient to use than older computers.
However, you also need to account for heating and cooling. In cold weather, a home computer running in a living space with a thermostat is also heating the space, offsetting the activity by the heating system.
