Pale golden yellow ginkgo leaves are photographed from below, filling the frame and lit by the sky beyond, with a shallow depth of field that brings only the fine branch and leaves at the centre of the image into focus. Ginkgos are native to China and are one of the oldest species of trees in the world. Fossils of the same family date back to at least the Middle Jurassic period, around 170 million years ago. Because of their resilience and longevity, Ginkgos are given special significance in Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism and so are also widely planted in Korea and Japan. Six Ginkgo trees growing within one to two kilometers of the 1945 Hiroshima atomic bombing were among the few living organisms to survive so close to the blast.
