How to disable HQ as default page?

Just updated my hub to version 6.0 \o/ Looks awesome! Thanks everyone.

I have a question about HQ app. It is now forced as default landing page while not even enabled by user. Is there a way to treat it as any other app? I mean to give user chance to have it on or off and have it disabled by default?

I was wondering about that, too - But I also fail to see the startpage app in the list. Addon repo ist up to date.

@Witcraft You have to install the "Start Page"-App in the Admin-Options (Administration/Addons).

Configure the app, delete hq in the text box and put, for example, network. Or whatever you want to appear when logging in.

What does the HQ abbreviation actually mean? What should be the benefit of HQ?

The control of HQ is definitely worth thinking about. A user can enable or disable HQ; however, it doesn't matter because HQ is invoked by default at logon and works whether enabled or not.

The fact that an admin can change the control is questionable, because that then applies again to all users.

And by the way, with forum channels like Hubzilla Support, anonymous visitors only see what HQ delivers. Looks a little poor to me.

The admin has to enable the startpage addon which provides the startpage app for all channels. If you install the startpage app, you can configure your personal startpage within the app.

I'm seeing the same as a logged in visitor. It appears the channel page is now restricted to one conversation thread with no way to navigate to additional posts and conversations except by randomly clicking categories and tags. This would make it a bit difficult to use as a blog (for example). I haven't had time to investigate but wanted to make sure this got noticed because I think it's a bit of a regression unless there are some forward and back buttons to get to older posts.

There seems to be an javascript error at @Hubzilla Support Forum. I am not seeing this at other sites though...

It appears I do have "start page" enabled since ever. Is there though a way to pre-set the start page for everyuser? They could then change it to whatever they like in the start page app?

Also I noticed HQ being used by default and set as default even if user did not install HQ himself nor admin pre-set it to everyone.
If user disables HQ, it is still there. The only way to sort of get rid of it is by setting "start page" but even then, when clicking on notifications, the posts will open in HQ app which is not suppose to be even enabled.

This is not currently implemented.

HQ is a system app and can not be uninstalled. Just like channel, stream, etc...

I see. It kind if breaks the workflow and UX if you intend your instance to be social network focused rather then small personal instance.

@muppeth why? Before, when you clicked a notification you were redirected to /display now you are redirected to /hq. The only difference is the wudget at the left aside...

That may be true but I, too, had a hard time to adapt to HQ as a list of headlines to the left that I have to click through one by one in order to browse content - I prefer the stream, I do not see that I have much use for the HQ (The configurable menu on top right gives me access to all sections, too) - I would not want it to be my default landing page. It works for me because I can override it with the addon to work as in the previous design :-)

Anyway, you can look at HQ as a kind of dashboard that gives you an overview and quick access to the latest messages, direct messages and the messages you decorated with a star. More useful widgets might follow...

I rarely use direct messages, but for that, I consider HQ really well-suited. Maybe I have yet to discover the advantages for other messages, too :-)

In any case: Thanks for the great, committed, and thought through work - I really appreciate it! Including the great results! I was already convinced when I learned about it, but have become a committed fan of HBZ

I like the nice overview of direct messages, this is an improvement since the mail app was removed (it did excually all the stuff at that time and did it good imo). I can understand that HQ could work for some use cases, but it does not for others, and so I think that choice should be configurable by admin of the hub. For example, as new user, without contacts, the first page is essentially an app that shows nothing. This introduces even stepper kerning curve to already quite a big one. And in case you have ton of contacts producing ton of content, it's also hard to see what's what. eg. in 8 hours my "Network" notification count is at over 300, and that;s because I clicked them all as Marked read this morning (because of HQ). I never done it before because I didnt see much reason to do so, and so I had over 40K of posts marked as unread in my Network stream, which renders HQ main page, totally unusable. Even with 276 posts it does IMO.

It's great to have yet another way of displaying content for people so they can choose what is their preferred way, but for admins, building their own experience of the hub I think it's important to also give freedom to decide on which building blocks to use. So I would kindly like to request possibility for admins to set default starting page. I could imagine someone wanting to build essentially gallery app being the main focus or wikis/websites etc. I think leaving the decision which start page to use on the hub open is a good idea.

I believe

util/config system.startpage https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/foo

will set the startpage to 'foo' for anybody who hasn't specifically changed it to something else. I haven't tested, but that's the way the code reads.

util/config ... sure. But I am quite in doubt if the execution option of util/config should be possible or even desired for every user of the hub instance. Because that is yet another level than an admin has.

It currently seems that different users cannot easily switch between HQ and Stream according to their own preferences.

So upon clicking notification conversation is opened in HQ app. Would be much better if that would open in Network app (startpage) though this could cause some issues if one sets tartpage to something like wiki etc.
It's still weird that stuff displays in an app that is not even enabled by user. This could be confusing and breaking consistency of UX

@muppeth notification never opened in /network. They used to be opened in /display which is basically equivalent to /hq except for the widget in left aside.

@Mario Vavti True that. Still it wasn't suddenly unknown set of UI. Now if you did not setup HQ on your account and have no idea about it's existence going suddenly to HQ seems weird and confusing. I guess that's something to get used to. Being able to preset start page from admin panel would be great addition and solution to the issue.
