Iunno, i think "Social media sux. So does nonalcoholic beer. We should do something different" is pretty unconvincing without any suggestion of what "something different" looks like
Mentioning "dark patterns" without considering that a not for profit, non-ad based social media system has different issues feels unfair. What patterns exactly?
I don't need a blueprint for a new social media. Just more to go off of than "trust me, this sucks and it'll always suck"

I don't think any open social network where people can have conflict of ideas will be free of hate speech and uncivilized disagreements.
The referred article uses nine paragraphs, but I couldn't find any substantial criticism of the Fediverse and some of its problems.
But if you have a website that doesn't allow far right propaganda or any other form of intentional hate speech, the likelihood of people being harmed will be lower.

1) that’s a 4 year old post and people reading it to answer this should realize that - things change faster than that
2) it’s got some great points but doesn’t quite pull them together to the conclusion: the problem is not the particular platform.
It is and has always been in the wetware.
You aren’t going to have a different result when you make something modeled off the *behavioural architecture* of the old thing just because you made it open source.

Granted, this blog post is four years old. It predates not only the rise of Bluesky, but also even Musk's Twitter takeover announcement, much less the actual takeover.
But once again, there's this "Mastodon and the Fediverse", and once again with the same old meaning. "Mastodon" as in Mastodon the software and "Fediverse" as in the Mastodon network.
Another post that claims, no,
insists
that the Fediverse is literally Twitter with 500 characters because it only consists of Mastodon. Mastodon 3.x, actually, which hardly had any features that Twitter didn't have. But take a look at Hubzilla, which is where this comment comes from, even though most people will see it on Mastodon. Daily-drive Hubzilla for a year or two. And then tell me with a straight face that Hubzilla is a Twitter clone and all the same as Twitter.
And once again, I guess that literally nobody who is on Mastodon now sees anything wrong with this notion, and I only expect the usual small handful of non-Mastodon users to complain about it.
