Hubzilla public servers list(s)

Is there a list of public hubzilla servers? A search via duckduckgo and mojeek was not satisfactory (a query result referred to version 3!). Please do not suggest to use 'amgaf' search engines; want to indicate to aquaintances, how open source software services can begin, from their use.

The ideal server should allow young people to sign up and have public content disabled by default

I'd suggest a combined search using FediDB and Fediverse Observer. You may also add the communities list of a (streams) instance, filtered for Hubzilla, to the mix.

FediDB and (streams) list hubs with versions. 9.2.1 is up-to-date. 9.2. is slightly out-of-date. 9.0 is a lot out-of-date. Anything older can be considered dead or unmaintained. And anything newer than 9.2.1 is bleeding-edge development code.

Depends on how young. I'm not sure if there are hubs that let people under 13 join.

And to my best knowledge, all public hubs have the pubstream off because it can't be moderated, and the hub admin can theoretically be held liable for illegal content spotted on the pubstream.

As a distraction, had a look at 'federated works' web site. It makes some bold (dubious) claims about millions of channels, users and thousands of millions of posts! ;)

The choices of domains names is also a disappointment.

Then we've got different definitions of public.

I don't mean "public" = the hub is visible to the general public and not hidden from it.

I mean "public" = not a private, single-user/family hub, but used by people who are not necessarily the admin or acquaintances of the admin. Registration may or may not be open.

Private, single-user hubs sometimes have their pubstreams on. But on these hubs, the admin has full control over what content comes in because any and all content comes in via the admin's own channels. And so the admin can filter and moderate the pubstream by filtering and moderating their own channel streams.

Do I understand this correctly? It's not about whether the hub allows access to the public post stream, but about the fact that the default setting when creating the channel is the channel role ‘private’, so posts are explicitly only distributed to connections?

Unfortunately, this is not obvious before registering with a hub. The default is probably ‘public’. You would have to ask the admin explicitly beforehand or set up your own hub with this setting.

As far as the statistics and figures for Hubzilla are concerned, something seems to have been going wrong for some time. The numbers have suddenly collapsed, The Federation is absolutely no longer a reliable source (it was always a rather unstable service anyway). FediDB has 70 registered hubs, Fediverse Observer only 47.

I think the FediDB figures fit.

The number of ‘channels’ mentioned at Federated Works does not mean the number of Hubzilla channels, but the number of all channels (accounts) for all Fedivese services. This has, of course, increased considerably recently because all Wordpress sites with the AP plugin are now included.

I am not personally aware of servers with this kind of behaviour. I guess you won't find them in any ‘directory’ either, because they are more likely to be closed communities.

Without a public feed, what is there to show without specifying a specific channel to view? And if you are suggesting that specific channels shouldn't show, either, now you have to find a server in which no one is allowed to post public messages (which I don't think is possible to prohibit).
