Moscow considers sanctions against LithuaniaLithuania could be disconnected from energy supplies. This would be the most painful economic option Moscow could choose as a response to Vilnius' hostile act. Lithuania is currently connected to the BRELL energy ring that links Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Baltics have long declared their desire to abandon this system and merge completely into the EU's energy systems. However, the energy transition to Europe - scheduled for 2025 - still has to overcome considerable difficulties, so the Baltic countries are still heavily dependent on Russian electricity. Disconnecting Lithuania from BRELL earlier than planned will create very serious problems for the economy of Vilnius and the quality of life of the Lithuanian population.
