Hubzilla Statistics

I was looking over the Hubzilla statistics from various sources, and I noticed a huge discrepancy.

Hubzilla Statistics from Libera.site reports 196 servers, but FediDB reports 92, and Fediverse Observer reports 63. I wonder why.

Different methodology, probably. I know at least fedidb let's you register your hub if it's not found in their data.

@Harald Eilertsen Maybe FediDB and Fediverse Observer use ActivityPub to crawl instances. And I guess there are lots of private, single-user hubs or special-purpose hubs that either don't have any channel with ActivityPub on or even ActivityPub off at hub level, and thus, ActivityPub-based crawlers can't see them.

@Jupiter Rowland I'm not sure, but I think they look at nodeinfo, but I haven't checked the code.

I also noticed that libera.site had a large jump in november last year, which may suggest they made a change to the way they count or find instances as well. Difficult to know without comparing what they actually measure, and how.

@Harald Eilertsen Well, they do have to find hubs in the first place. And if they start searching on Mastodon (or actually only even crawl Mastodon), they can't find what doesn't use ActivityPub because what doesn't use ActivityPub doesn't leave traces on Mastodon.

Or maybe, just like occasional stats jumps, it can be blamed on that pesky Diaspora Statistics app that appears to be necessary for Hubzilla to send certain stats.
