This is an interesting fediverse app. Interaction with Mastodon does work...

It would be really cool it if would also work with Hubzilla.

What is missing to make it work with HZ?

The same as making any fediverse app work with any other fediverse app at any time in history. Namely, somebody examining the ActivityPub packets and figuring out what's different. If one discovers something unexpectedly different, patch the code to deal with it or file an issue with the other project. .

Here is what I can tell you. When initiating a connection from bookwyrm, it performs a webfinger lookup to your hz/zap/whatever identity. That's the last thing it does. We would expect it to find the activitypub "self" record there and load the actor record but instead it stops and reports that nothing was found. I've compared this with a mastodon account and we have all the required fields for activitypub federation and in fact provide a superset of Mastodon in this regard.

So issue #1: After fetching the webfinger record, why is bookwyrm failing to continue? It seems to find something it doesn't like, or doesn't find something required, although all the federation requirements all appear to be present.

This results in the failure to send a follow activity from bookwyrm, so that path is essentially a dead end to federation with our software at the moment.

So we'll try from the other direction - connect to the bookwyrm person from hz/zap/etc. In this case our lookup succeeds. Internal records are provided and stored, and a follow activity is sent to bookwyrm. This is rejected outright with a 401 error. This activity looks something like:

So issue #2: why is this activity being rejected?  I suspect it may be also be due to the lookup issue, as they won't be able to accept a connection from somebody they can't discover.

I've had a brief look at bookwyrm's code but don't see anything obvious at first glance.  So it might be time to open an issue report. I've done this. You're welcome to follow along:

Update: I believe I may have found the source of the problem. It appears from the code that Bookwyrm is sending the wrong Accept header so we don't know what kind of data to send back. I've submitted a possible fix in the comments which should at least let us connect; though we may run into additional issues as we descend further into the rabbit hole.

@RockyIII Maybe, but there's no chance in hell I'll try this out. Apparently this project uses - among other things - a PostgreSQL container, a Redid container and a webserver - nginx in this case. The thing is, I already have all these services - PostgreSQL, Redis, webserver - running and tuned to the specific hardware. So Bookwyrm wants to redundantly run another those services, too (which might perform poorly).

Call me old-fashioned, but I'm a little bit fed up with projects that give no thoughts at all how to run the services productively and try a "one size fits all" approach using docker or such things.

So interesting idea, but a mere plaything for devs with no regards of ops.

@RockyIII Don’t really know. I like funkwhale quite a lot, but that’s more for streaming and sharing. But sharing what music in which form someone has would be a cool feature. Like Discogs without the selling/buying part.
