As a general rule of thumb, don't start dating stories until you reach an experience level where they earn their spot on artistic merit rather than novelty.

How often should you use quotes?
Although quotes bring a story to life, it is still possible to kill a good story by carelessness, particularly by excessive repetition. It's like smothering a meal with sauce, drowning out the taste of meat. Each date must earn its place in history. Don't put quotes in strings just because you have them in your notebook.
Alternate quotes and indirect speech, choosing those that are especially strong and rewriting in indirect speech those that are too complicated or too long. Just because someone said something does not mean that they were expressed well or clearly. If the quote is likely to confuse your readers or spoil the rest of the story, turn the words into indirect speech. As we said before, very few people are able to compress ideas into sentences better than a good journalist.
