What's wrong with all those micro-blogging plattforms that were once good to great and now are either gone or so complicated in managing accounts that simplicity is missing and therefore it's a chore to use them?

After many years I tried to befriend #tumblr again and what can I say? The management of my account went totally wrong! I have now another account which I didn't want but was built by TUMBLR accidently because I can't log into my account I started on my iPhone. (1/4)

What the fuck is wrong with software designers, programmers that totally forget about the user experience and a good UI? I experience that software and services become worse over the past ten years. Once easy to use apps and services now are complicated as hell.

Okay, maybe its me. I get older. But I do remember times where good software was well designed and the ease of use was the key for success. (3/4)

I get pretty frustrated with this situation. Especcially because even the #fediverse doesn't offer anything similar to TUMBLR. Or Facebook.

A simple micro-blogging service for pictures, videos and creativity. That would be just fine ... (4/4)

As for Tumblr: For one, there's Wafrn which aims to be a direct drop-in replacement for Tumblr. Downside: The project website is also the only instance (so far?).

As for Facebook: @Mike Macgirvin ?️ has spent the last 15 years developing about a dozen Fediverse server applications which are (also) designed to be alternatives to Facebook. Today, there are still Friendica (2010), Hubzilla (2012/2015), (streams) (2021) and Forte (2024).

However, if what you're looking for is "literally Facebook without Musk and with ActivityPub", as in a 1:1 Facebook clone that looks like Facebook and feels like Facebook just like Bluesky looks and feels like early Twitter, then you're out of luck. All four are "better than Facebook" Facebook alternatives that add useful stuff on top, but that don't look and feel close enough to Facebook for nobody to have to learn something new. The closest you'll get is Friendica if the node in question has the Bookface theme installed.

Even then you'll have to "install" Friendica on your iPhone as a progressive Web app through Safari and use its own Web interface (which is mobile-compatible). There is no native app for Friendica for the iPhone in the Apple App Store. There's one in development, but it's far from complete. And while Friendica supports Mastodon apps, a Mastodon app only covers a small fraction of Friendica's features, it leaves out some features that you'll need daily (simply because Mastodon doesn't have them), and I'm not sure if there's any Mastodon app for the iPhone that works with Friendica; it has officially only ever been tested with Android.
