As far as anybody can tell, this Op-Ed is the *only* reason why Marco Rubio had Rumeysa Ozturk kidnapped by ICE agents and revoked her visa: https://www.tuftsdaily.com/article/2024/03/4ftk27sm6jkj

I think everyone should at least give it a quick skim. I think it's especially important for liberals from outside of the Tufts University community to see. Please do what you can to put the Op-Ed in front of more eyes.

Two reasons why people should read Rumeysa Ozturk's Op-Ed:

1) To really understand what level of First Amendment violation we're up against.

2) Send the message to the Trump administration that vanishing people for speech will only increase interest in reading their words.

The mainstream press have *not* been doing a good job of covering the implications Rumeysa Ozturk's kidnapping.

I recently had a conversation with some strongly progressive family members who were concerned about the arrest and wanted to hear my perspective as someone living in the affected communities.

I sent them the Op-Ed, and---even as left-leaning progressives---they were startled by how inoffensive it is.

The TuftsDaily Op-Ed is, of course, an opinion piece, and there can be room for difference of opinion on these kinds of issues.

The question for liberals is not "Do you agree with what Rumeysa said in the Op-Ed?"

The question is: "Is it reasonable for the federal government to kidnap and imprison people for this type of writing?"

@dynamic By all means it's nice if people read it, but I don't think the administration actually cares that much about what it says. Presumably they're getting their hit lists from Canary Mission and similar. I doubt they have read it themselves. They are more interested in establishing "we get to disappear people because we say so" than "we get to do it because the person did X, Y, or Z." Calling folks gang members because they are Latino and have tattoos or Hamas terrorists because they said something critical of Israel ate just the most convenient excuses because those groups sound scary and other and have the bonus that targeting them appeals to subsets of their base. But, the point should be, the content of the op-ed is irrelevant. Hell, they haven't even given that as the reason. They have given no reason! Why do their work for them and try to guess their reasoning? They are specifically trying to insist that they need no justification. To reply "but it's unjustified (because the op-ed is mild)" misses the point!

It currently seems to load okay on my computer, but I've definitely had troubles connecting to related articles on the Tufts Daily in the past couple days. It's possible that part of the issue is just that the campus newspaper website isn't configured for widespread international traffic and nothing nefarious is going on, but it's definitely unsettling when errors like that show up.
