something i've noticed is people not
#CW
'ing the preview images from links they're posting.
please make sure you hide brutal or, idk, nazi imagery from the articles you're linking. thanks.

If it was possible for everyone in the Fediverse to know beforehand with 100% certainty which image Mastodon will use as the preview image.
I mean, unlike Mastodon users, I do have a preview feature for post drafts over here on Hubzilla. But I can only preview posts the way they'll look like on Hubzilla which doesn't have link previews. I can't have Hubzilla generate a preview of how the same post will be rendered by Mastodon.
All I can do is send the post as-is, wait for it to be federated to some Mastodon instances and look for it there. However, the moment my post hits Mastodon, it's too late, the damage is done, and it can't really be undone.
Sometimes Mastodon picks my profile picture as a link preview out of the blue if I don't have any links in a post. I'd have to put a "CW: eye contact" content warning and the hashtags
#EyeContact #CWEyeContact
on every last one of my posts, at least those with no links, to be on the safe side.
If this happens in a
comment
, i.e. any kind of reply, there's nothing I can do anyway. Hubzilla doesn't provide any means for adding a summary (= a Mastodon content warning) to a comment. All I can do then is add hashtags for people to filter and hope not too many people will block me for something that they don't know I can't prevent from happening.

if you're posting a link to, say, a grisly news article, one would assume you know what's in it. it's not necessary to be 100% certain if the 1 image the preview will contain needs a particular CW or not. if you *know* the article features one or more images that most definitely need a CW, you can use one regardless.

I never link to general mainstream or alt media news articles. If I ever link to anything, it's either extremely special interest, namely related to certain 3-D virtual worlds, or a link to one of my own posts.
I know that Mastodon generates preview images for links to my posts and links to my articles, and it doesn't generate preview images for links to my image pages. But that's about all. If I link to anything outside the Fediverse, I don't know what'll happen.
I mean, I already add lots of content warnings. If this was a post, which it isn't, I'd warn about it being a long post with over 1,200 characters, Fediverse meta, non-Mastodon Fediverse meta, content warning meta and eye contact being mentioned.
But if I warn about eye contact because I've linked to something that contains at least one image that shows a face or an eye or so somewhere in at least one image, and then there isn't even a single image anywhere in my post, and the post doesn't mention any eye contact either, my content warnings lose credibility.
