@Scott, present & accounted for No, it's controversial because some people don't want the FULLY DECENTRAL Fediverse to depend on and be controlled through a CENTRAL service.

And some other people want the whole of the Fediverse to be one big centralised, monolithic Twitter-clone silo for their own convenience.

@jupiter_rowland I ? respect that we don’t want to repeat the failings of the easily Internet. But Tootfinder is just a search index of public data. And opt-in at that. Nothing stops someone else from making another competing search engine. The trouble with Google (and others) began when “search engines” became portals and locked people in with other services that they couldn’t take with them. It seems to me that the Fediverse architecture prevents that. Yes?

@benpate @jupiter_rowland Words on #Mastodon with #hashtags are now fully searchable yet it’s still a decentralized network. ??‍♂️ People are opting in for their posts to be searchable now by including #hashtags. Individuals should be able to opt in for their posts to be fully searchable #without #having #to #use #lots #of #hashtags. If you don’t want your posts to be searchable, then don’t opt in.
