@J12t Also very nice to have: a "permanent" fediverse ID that people can put on their business cards / share in the physical world. A Fediverse "carrd", if you will. Ppl would add any/all of their Fedi profiles, and it would update whenever those profiles were fedi-migrated.

@J12t I don't understand the tech behind it, so I won't speak as to protocols. It would be nice if it could be a widget that ppl could put into their personal site if they chose, but it really should be a centralized site - for ppl who cannot host their own website but still participate in the fediverse, and for larger-fediverse branding. If people could see that their FediPresence could be found even years down the road, they'd feel more comfortable hopping over.

@J12t Actual end-user-visible format would be the platforms they're on (Mastodon, Akkoma, PeerTube, et cetera) and then their URL on that platform. Similar to how Mastodon users can list four items in their profile. Would need more than four lines, and people should be able to choose the platform for each line rather than being restricted to a single instance for, say, Writely - or having empty lines for platforms that they aren't on.

@J12t @thelaughingmuse Yeah, this is super interesting. And I agree the technical problems are far from being the hard ones here. How do you maintain/support such a thing. Could instances chip in?

The ID could just be a hash of a stable email address. You'd have to do verification on that identifier *and* via each associated account's metadata.

@fm2279 @J12t I would chip in for such a thing, if the donations were small enough. (A site like this won't need as much bandwidth as a Mastodon instance like masto.ai, but it will need maintenance/support/hosting.) Or maybe an annual chip-in of $3 or $5 for individuals?

@J12t @fm2279 If it isn't something that your standard non-technical user would easily recognize and remember, the project would have diminishing returns.

The main benefit of this project would be to create an IRL-facing "directory" for all users. The masto-style @foo@bar.com is highly recognizeable even to the least technical of internet denizens. Get a domain like fediverse.com and there's some solid branding.

@J12t @fm2279 Maybe it could be - but I'd also want a way for individuals to contribute, so that

a) individuals have a little more "ownership" of the fediverse
b) instances don't end up carrying the fediverse and having to try and pump their users for additional revenue to cover those costs (especially the micro-instances that have fewer than 100 users.)

People should see how things are paid for. Won't ever get funding from everyone, but let's not put up roadblocks for those who want to help.

#NomadicIdentity is currently only supported by #Hubzilla and #Streams along with several EOL projects which led from Hubzilla to (streams).

One part of it is the ease of moving an entire channel with everything on it from one instance to another.

Another even more intriguing part is that you can have the same channel simultaneously on multiple instances, automatically kept in-sync in real-time. This makes your channel highly resilient against instance shutdowns. One clone is gone, doesn't matter, you've got some more. Your main clone is gone, doesn't matter, you declare another one your main.

Nomadic identity is also why #OpenWebAuth was created: If you're logged into one Hubzilla hub, all others will recognise your login credentials if you access them in your Web browser. If you visit another instance on which you have a clone with the same credentials, you're automatically being fully logged in.
