MariaDB or Postresql?

As I prepare to "spin up" a new hub on #YunoHost I'm wondering if there are pros or cons - from the perspective of #hubzilla - for choosing #MariaDB or #Postresql as the database? I don't know a lot about either, really. My Yunohost server seems to be running both already, for different apps, so it's not a questions of choosing the one that's already there...

I could simply go with the default (MariaDB), but I'm curious about why the Postresql option is provided, and what benefits it provides, or what use case does it serve?

Each has its proponents and there is no clear winner. That said, the software is mostly designed around MySQL/MariaDB and there is a bit more experience and support available when using that technology; but it does tend to use more resources than PG. There is also a significant difference in the ability to search the database in a case-insensitive manner; which we don't support under Postgres. So if you want to search for 'stuart' and find your channel, you might want to go with MySQL/MariaDB. This is especially important for directory servers where people on other sites are using your service and expect searches to be case insensitive. But as a general rule, we don't care what you use and and both should work just fine.

Thanks @mike that's interesting to know. I'm intrigued by Postgres (not sure why, given I don't know anything about it beyond a superficial level), and I am a fan of resource efficiency but, given where I'm at on the learning curve, I think I'll stick with MariaDB.

I went with MariaDB as well but as @Nanook points out, it gets pretty chatty. I'm spinning up a new host on my favorite cloud that will exclusively handle MariaDB, though I can't bring myself to let go and do it as a service. I still like having direct control with how it scales.
