Okay, turns out you can't start new threads in a #
Friendica
group from #
Hubzilla
currently.
It's amazing how these two projects have developed away from one another. I mean, Hubzilla started out by being forked off Friendica by Friendica's own inventor, but that was almost eleven years ago, and apparently, there was zero coordination between the two projects.
I hope it won't take too long to sort this out.

If even @
Mario Vavti
tries and fails, and he did, it's safe to assume it's actually impossible. And he runs a #
Hubzilla
development version that's said to have merged in a number of fixes regarding #
Friendica
groups already.
But it's also safe to assume that the Hubzilla devs are aware of this issue. I'm confident that Hubzilla will learn again how Friendica groups work. And I hope that Streams won't drift away from Hubzilla like Hubzilla drifted away from Friendica.

Maybe because the communication between the 2 happening via ActivityPub protocol today..
There is not other protocol today used for this communication, right?
How ActivityPub works with "groups"? How they, in friendica, work with groups? What protocol? Can you do this from mastodon?

Right now I don't remember well at the time of the fork if we, in the new project, were able to communicate/comment in friendica
groups
, but, at the time, the protocol used to communicate with friendica was "Diaspora", then later this was replaced and the Diaspora protocol disappeared from the radar of the news projects...

For Friendica groups, just @-mention the group in a public post. I submitted a patch to that project 2-3 years ago to allow it to work with the dozen other groups implementations that (streams) supports and still support private groups, but obviously there was more to it. They simply Announce the post to group members and this doesn't work if the post is private; which ours need to be because we support private and moderated groups.

For Friendica groups, just @-mention the group in a public post.
The start post of this thread was my attempt at this. I had expected it to work myself; it was the most logical thing to do. Six hours later, the post still hasn't appeared in the group.
I can reply to existing posts just fine, though.
And @
Mario Vavti
himself says he
can start threads in Friendica groups from Lemmy, but not from Hubzilla
. I don't expect him to shrug it off.
@
Giac El Vecio
Yes, I'm already following the group.

If you (HZ) and the friendica group, the 2 use 2 protocols (Diaspora and ActivityPub) , maybe the conflict of the 2 protocols can be the problem?

A year or two ago I submitted a patch to make Friendica group detection work from streams (probably was zap at that time). I've just looked and all of that code has been re-worked and my patch doesn't seem to be there. I can't tell what they're doing now and I don't have time today to look into this. Please file a bug with the friendica folks.

Tempting idea, also because I do have the Diaspora* app on; never used it, but it's on. However, the group is clearly an ActivityPub connection. I wouldn't expect the Diaspora* app to be meddling with it.
There may be another cause, though. Food for thought: The dot on the group's pic is red which, in my book, means the group not only isn't following me back, but it doesn't even seem to have accepted my connection.
For comparison: Hubzilla forums have yellow dots once my connection is accepted. If a Hubzilla forum requires manual member activation, and it's essentially dead, and I can't get beyond the red dot, I can't post there either.
Fediverse News seems to be fully automated. New members are normally accepted automatically. Whatever ought to trigger this, Hubzilla and Streams seem not to send it. Unfortunately, it doesn't make its member list public, so I can't see whether any Hubzilla or Streams users are technically group members.
More food for thought: When I look at
the profile page of the group
, it offers me to follow it, even with cookies on. I'm not entirely sure if it's just me getting used to the magic of OpenWebAuth.
I'm still not sure either whether the issue lies on Friendica's side. After all, everything runs through the same ActivityPub connector there, regardless of where outside of Friendica it comes from (except Diaspora* and everything else pre-ActivityPub, that is).

That's It.
I did a test with my test channel and my connection requests doesn't seem to reach the site...

Managed to join via streams without issue. A successful join is indicated by the fact that "their permissions" has anything enabled. These are only set when that side sends an approval. But I'm not going to hijack their channel with test posts. I also setup a test group/forum on one of the public sites, but I chose a crappy site and all incoming posts timeout. So I removed that. Maybe I'll find one that works. Maybe not. My lunch break is over so it's back to work for $employer, and that's all I can do today.

Setting up a Friendica test site to try this out. The installation wasn't any fun - had to install by hand because it white-screened and adding lines to turn on php logging were ignored. And I had to downgrade to php7.x. And it doesn't seem to want to receive posts from anywhere. What joy. Thought it was probably just a problem in develop, so I switched to stable. Something about db update incompatibility ... "Sorry Dave, I can't let you do that". Maybe I'll be able to get it running, maybe not. Mebbe I'll start from scratch using the stable branch but I've kind of lost the motivation.

OK, made some progress. The answer to sending top-level forum posts to Friendica from streams is to just send a public post with a mention. This works. I suspect Hubzilla folks will need to do the same.

Did you first connect to the Friendica group? If so, was the connection accepted (yellow dot or whatever Streams has instead)?
If successfully joining a Friendica group is a key factor in fully being able to participate, then it may have to be investigated why Hubzilla (and also Streams) users can't join at least this particular group and end up only following it.

Yes, I connected to the group first in both cases. I don't know about Hubzilla but this works fine in streams.

Maybe it was just a matter of time and patience

So I deleted my connection and tried to re-connect to the same group.
Last time, I used the green Add button on my Connections page. This time, I used the Follow button on the group page.
The result is the same: red dot, no actual connection.
I also tried to connect to
the Friendica support forum
, also to see if the issue might be on the side of venera.social. Same result, added to my list, but no actual connection and a red dot.
Maybe we should take this to the support group.
