They aren’t honestly. what’s more helpful is just providing the access. If anybody actively prevents you from providing the access, that’s when you can get firm and aggressive with them. There are people on here that will actively do things like, type, purposefully left blank in the alt text field. For these kinds of people, education is never going to work because they’re providing a hostile infrastructure so for those kinds of people, I think we need to be more aggressive not less

Honest question from an alt-text and image description perfectionist to a blind user: When is it actually accessible enough that whoever posts an image doesn't have to fear repercussions?
Okay, there has to be an alt-text. It has to actually describe the image. So much is clear to me.
And I guess that while at least some blind people in the Fediverse treasure whimsy higher than accuracy, others may want alt-text to be accurate.
But it looks to me like there is a rather narrow margin between alt-text with not enough details and alt-text that's too long and/or too detailed. This isn't communicated anywhere. It's unclear, too, whether that margin is always the same, or whether it shifts with the content of the image, the context and someone's individual idea of who the audience of an image post is.
And seriously, there are images that simply cannot be described in a way that's perfectly ideal and useful for absolutely everyone out there. I've posted such images in the past, and my image descriptions must have broken all length records in the Fediverse. But I think not everyone is happy about having to read through such monsters.

I try to but I don't always. I've ended up often deleting pictures or whole toots because I'm not happy with the alt text, or it's taking 10 minutes to write and rewrite and one finger typing on a phone with my massive hands is horrible. On the plus side I waste less time on mastodon now, as does everyone else who benefits from me not taking up space on their timeline.

On my own posts I always add alt-text.
When boosting posts, alt-text being present helps. I don't exclude all posts without AT from boosting, but quite a few.
To balance out: sometimes I present an
#Alt4you
in a reply. So I also look in the replys before boosting (or before suggesting AT)

Always. It slows me down (which is fine, but it still feels like a trade-off sometimes, or maybe I can just try to get quicker at it), and I worry that it feeds AI (not only that, but I worry that I’m writing alt text as if AI were writing it). Never any jokes or burying of information in alt text (though I worry that I’m adding inflation in the alt text that belongs in the post).

I rarely don't add alt-text to images, in those cases I post something I want to show only to a certain person. Besides that I rather not post a picture before I post something without alt-text. There were cases where I just link to an older toot of mine with a picture (with alt-text) instead of re-posting it, because I'm too lazy to put in the alt-text again.
I wish I could put alt-text into a metadata fiels of a picture instead of typing it on the fly when posting.

I started always adding them when some folks I followed explained how important it is for some folks usability.
I never realized it but once I did, it totally makes sense and I want my posts to be accessible.
I don't know I always do a great job of it through.

I only usually add alt text because I sometimes use decorative images. I've read that decorative images aren't meant to have descriptive alt text.

I'm close to "Always" so I picked that one.
The habit of adding alt-text on Mastodon has also taught me to make a difference in alt-text and mouseover-title. alt-text makes the image accessible ('map of world with contacts by PE4KH in CQWW DX CW contest'), mouseover is for context for sighted visitors ('Contacts by PE4KH in CQWW DX CW contest').
The average sighted visitor recognizes the world map but may not understand the dots and lines on it.

i always do it except when i'm really tired and probably shouldn't even be awake, yet alone on fedi. and when i'm too tired to, i almost always edit the post and add alt text in the mornyan. mostly because i use a screen reader myself (because of inyability to read, not inyability to see).

Honestly the second I became aware that people with reduced or no sight were on there and making use of the alt text, it became very difficult not to.
Like, it is of so little cost and inconvenience to me, ultimately. If I balk at describing what I'm posting for someone who can't see, then maybe it wasn't worth posting in the first place.

Yes ,but very limited. I'm a photographer not a prose writer so I write what the photo is (e.g. "a tree in the forest") but I don't try to write a detailed description of the tree.

I choose "sometimes" due to the fact there's nothing to add to some images. But, I do in fact, attempt to do so in general. It makes me flex that brain muscle of mine that's been oh so dormant.

One nice feature in
@MonaApp
is that you can set it to remind you to add alt text if you forget to do so.
I try to always add alt text, but I’m a forgetful person. This has saved me from accidentally neglecting to add it — something I used to do often — on a number of occasions.

Always, with an asterisk.
Rarely, if I'm helping someone troubleshoot or otherwise figure something out, and I include a screenshot to show them what I see, I might not include alt text. The image is not intended for anyone but that person and I don't expect my toot to be boosted to a wider audience. Also, if I'm expending brainpower to help someone with something, I might not have the spoons to spend on alt text.
But when I'm posting for all to see, I take the time to make sure my alt text is up to snuff. Depending on my spoons situation, I might get very detailed or I might just cover the essentials, but I make sure it's useful.
