@keschi :neocat_box: :therian: Θ If your admin has the money for an API license, you can integrate an 𝕏 account into a Friendica account or a Hubzilla channel, just like you can integrate a Bluesky account into a Friendica account (yes, you can do that without a bridge), and just like you can integrate a Tumblr account into both.

The technology is still there and has been since long before Mastodon was made. Oh, and in case you don't know, both Friendica and Hubzilla are part of the Fediverse and federated with Mastodon (Hubzilla only optionally, but still, I'm posting this from Hubzilla right now).

The only reason why both Friendica and Hubzilla are factually disconnected from 𝕏 is because none of their admins (probably) can and want to pay for an 𝕏 API license. But, again, the technology is still there in both cases and installed on all Friendica nodes and Hubzilla hubs. It's just deactivated.

Ok, first off: Why the hell would I want to actively add something to federate with Musk's hellhole? Either way, Twitter does not actually federate. And your way would be one-way federation, which is not desirable when other social media are involved.

I know other things than Mastodon speak ActivityPub, but also other protocols.

No, the reason Twitter is disconnected for two reasons:

It does not federate by itself. It should not be upon others to clumsily add federation to a closed platform.
It has become a really, really awful place for third-party moderation, and Musk is openly a fascist, so why the hell would we federate?

Because you're Mike Macgirvin, it's 2010 or 2011, you're developing Friendika whose goal is to connect and federate with absolutely everything that exists, Twitter is still glorified SMS with 140 characters, and Elon Musk is a pot-smoking leftist visionary who is promoting electric cars and financing space travel. Over a decade before he becomes an über-Nazi overlord who wants to buy out Twitter.

I'm not talking about something that was created in 2022.

Friendica is from 2010, five and a half years older than Mastodon and almost half a year older than diaspora*. It's the oldest still existing Fediverse project. Friendica is so old that Mastodon has been federated with it for as long as Mastodon has been around. Its Twitter integration is not much newer. And Hubzilla inherited it from Friendica in 2012.

The Twitter integration works the same way as Friendica's Facebook integration worked around 2011/2012, and the same way as Friendica's Bluesky integration works today. You need an account there, but then you can insert your whole account into your Friendica account or your Hubzilla channel.

I was there on Friendica back in the day. I've done that with Facebook during the few months before Facebook banned it. My entire Facebook timeline was merged into my Friendica feed. My Facebook friends were listed among my Friendica contacts. I've posted to Friendica and diaspora* and Facebook at the same time with the same post, and I could get comments from all three under the same post. So this did work bidirectionally.

It was almost like using Facebook without actually using Facebook. But it went beyond that.

The idea behind it was not only for Friendica to connect to everything that moves and then some, but also for you to invite your Facebook friends over to Friendica. Before they'd do so, you on Friendica could stay in touch with them on Facebook. When they'd do so, they on Friendica could stay in touch with their friends on Facebook until they've moved. One day, your entire circle of friends would have moved from Facebook to Friendica, and you could turn the Facebook connector off and leave Facebook altogether. It'd be a seamless transition from Facebook to Friendica without cutting off connections.

The Twitter connector works just the same (only that the server admin would have to pay a whole lot of money for an API key to make it work). The Tumblr connector works just the same. The Bluesky connector, which is exclusive to Friendica, works just the same.

Besides, diaspora* itself doesn't federate to the outside either. But as soon as the first alpha was out, Mike Macgirvin and the Friendica community started reverse-engineering diaspora*'s source code and cracking its internal encryption to connect to diaspora* without any API available. Half a year later, they were done, and Friendica was federated with diaspora*. It was like connecting an external device to a computer by drilling a hole into the computer case and soldering the connection cable directly onto the circuit boards, wire by wire. And it was all done on Friendica's side. diaspora* has never helped in any way.

Hubzilla took over Friendica's diaspora* federation code, and I guess Socialhome got it from either Friendica or Hubzilla.
