So we have Timmy, the green gamer who loves putting big stuff on the battlefield, Johnny, the blue gamer who lives for cool and interesting combos, Spike, the black gamer who wants to win as fast as possible, and Vorthos, the red gamer who cares about the theming and lore of a character/place/etc. What will the white gamer be called, and what will they care about, if we even get a final gamer in the cycle?

If. Even if we get another Un-set greenlit, odds are we would do new things and not return to old stuff.

What would happen if mana screw was eliminated? How extensive has this been tested? Would it be such a bad thing to guarantee your first seven land drops?

It would be a bad thing as it would remove much of the variance that adds the dynamism to the game. I’ve designed other trading card games and removed it, and have always regretted it. I’ve talked to many trading card game designers who feel the same.

It’s why the mana system is part of my Golden Trifecta, the three genius ideas Richard Garfield created when making Magic. If you want more details, I did a whole podcast on the topic many years ago:

The Beast subtype came about because we decided we wanted to consolidate creature types a bit and it became the go to for big green creatures that didn’t have an existing creature type that made sense.

Hey Mark, mono-green has never had a simple demonic tutor but for creatures. Are simple (boring) effects like that not as likely under FIRE design?

It’s the kind of effect we’ll make one day. There are a surprisingly number of simple effects we haven’t done yet. There are just lots and lots of potential card designs.

None of this has anything to do with FIRE design.

FYI for people that want to know about the what Magic in 2024 will be. For the past several years Wizards has been announcing the next years worth of stuff in the middle of August so a few months from now should be the big announcement day.
