Utopia is a decentralized peer-to-peer network, with no central server involved in data transmission or storage. The network is supported by people who use it. Utopia Network is based on Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology. It has no single point of failure and is truly decentralized. This means that each node, including your Utopia software, transmits network data in encrypted mode. The communication cannot be intercepted by third-party, only the recipient is able to read it. The P2P technology ensures that you network activity, including surfing cannot be tracked or your identity revealed as all network communication is protected by super secure Curve25519 high-speed elliptic curve cryptography.
With Utopia you can send instant text and voice messages, transfer files, create group chats and channels, news feeds and conduct a private discussion. A channel can be geotagged using integrated uMaps which simplifies Utopia channel search and adds an additional security layer. As a result there is no need to use public map services which are known to collect your data to feed Big Data massives.
If you lose your encrypted local container (that's all your data) or your password it is gone forever. Your password is used to create the local encryption key. Because it's peer-to-peer it does mean that messages only flow when both are connected (one or the other person leaves their computer on). Right now there is no mobile client, but it installs on Windows, MacOS and Linux. The crypto mining part can be disabled, as well as peering for other nodes if you wish. Unlike ProtonMail or Tutanota there is no cap or cost fore exceeding certain usage BUT this only communicates with others who have accounts within the network so no sending or receiving of e-mails to external addresses.
So for this you need to add your friends or connect to others. The news channels are a way to meet like-minded folks with similar interests.
