I am on three social media platforms but it’s only here that people keep complaining about paywall articles (btw, I always post gift articles, but they can only be opened so many times). Why does Mastodon feel journalists don’t need to get paid?

Honestly, quite a few replies on this perfectly show why Mastodon is more annoying than the other places. If YOU don’t like something about how OTHER PEOPLE post, just don’t follow them?! Very moralising crowd out here.

So why are You here if everyone is so annoying? Just stay on Elmos X - I’m sure there is a nicer crowd there, right? Maybe you are more into bots, real hate and abuse than just the usual bunch complaining about Paywalls. Actually I found your responses rather aggressive, arrogant and overly opinionated. ? And with your ‘Gifted Articles’ you come across like a Marie Antoinette of Journalism. ‘Why don’t they love me? I’m giving them free stuff!’ ?

I normally try to avoid adding noise to the signal, but fwiw I really appreciate your posts, whether they have a paywalled link or not. You add in slug/pull quotes, so I get the idea even when I don’t click through.
Mastodon needs more voices like yours. Your insights considerably elevate the discourse here on technology, foreign policy, national security, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Thanks very much for doing that, in whatever way you choose.

true, you can see a lot of “this should be made available for free, how dare you posting paywall content here?!” attitude here - guess it’s because the platform attracts many people that are used to working with open source software where the general expectation is that everything should be for free. Looks like that in the end it every social media platform has their own little kind of demon ?

What you post is valuable and appreciated Ulrike. A good reminder for those of us who got into the habit of ‘not feeding the algorithm’ by not commenting on other platforms - well, it’s good to remember to say “Thanks for that” on Mastodon.
May help balance the other crowd.

By the same logic, if I don't like the way you behave on the road, I shouldn't drive?
If I don't like the way you act in public transport, I should get off?
The statement, "If you don't like the way people post, don't follow them", is very conservative and sounds a lot like "If you don't like America, leave".
Asking people to improve their posting behaviour, be it,
#altText
, or not linking to paywalled articles, or pointing out
#replyGuy
behaviour is the social in
#socialMedia
.

By the same logic again, everyone in the #
Fediverse
, no matter where they are, would be required to satisfy absolutely everyone else.
Everyone on projects outside of #
Mastodon
would be required to not make use of their higher character limits because a few Mastodon users don't want to see posts with over #
500Characters
.
This would essentially render detailed #
ImageDescriptions
impossible. If you put them into the post, it'd exceed the 500-character mark. If you put them into the #
AltText
, physically disabled might be unable to access them, and so any information only available in the #
ImageDescription
would be inaccessible for them.
Users of #
Friendica
, #
Hubzilla
and #
Streams
would not be allowed to have more than one image in their posts because Mastodon reverses the order of images when converting them to file attachments, confusing its users. Also, they would not be allowed to embed images between text blocks because that'd make look their posts weird and confusing to Mastodon users.
In fact, users of Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) would not be allowed to post images at all because these images might trigger someone, and they can't hide their images from Mastodon users.
Actually, detailed or hard-to-understand images would be completely forbidden Fediverse-wide in order not to dissatisfy those who like to read image descriptions to understand pictures.
Everyone would have to have a list of at least 90 #
ContentWarnings
ready, not counting country-specific politics, and make use of each one of them whenever they might be even the least bit applicable. In order to satisfy those with working reader-side #
ContentWarning
applications, each content warning would have to be doubled with at least one hashtag. Only having 500 characters would not be an acceptable excuse for Mastodon users.
On the other hand, the above would trigger those who dislike content warnings. So posting anything that could make anyone feel uncomfortable would not be allowed at all anymore. And yes, this includes automobiles, cats and Linux.
Users of just about everything that isn't Mastodon would not be allowed to #
quote
Mastodon users, even if they had the technical means to do so (which they have), and Mastodon has the technical means to show the quote correctly (which it has) due to #
QuoteToots
essentially equalling potential harassment.
Users of just about everything that isn't Mastodon would not be allowed to use text formatting because it might disturb those who still weep after Mastodon 3.x which completely removed all traces of text formatting from posts coming in from outside.
Nobody, especially not users of
literally
everything that isn't Mastodon, would be allowed to tell Mastodon users that #
MastodonIsNotTheFediverse
, and that there is more to the Fediverse than Mastodon. Some Mastodon users don't want to hear that.
Users of #
Misskey
, #
Firefish
, #
FoundKey
, Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) would have to refrain from ever mentioning anyone so that users of other projects, especially Mastodon, would not be disturbed by how weird their mentions look.
Finally, Hubzilla and (streams) users would not be allowed to react upon these requirements by turning their #
ActivityPub
connectors off and thereby cutting Mastodon and all the other projects completely off. If they were technically in the Fediverse, but impossible to connect to from Mastodon, they'd create a situation that'd be too confusing, hard to understand and disturbing for Mastodon users and users of other ActivityPub-based projects. Also, it'd be a rude display of alleged superiority, entitlement and privilege.

Sure, some things are generally seen as good manners in the #
Fediverse
. But if you want to fully satisfy any individual and their wishes, you'll have to satisfy them all. Everything else would be discrimination.

You sure know how to pick them.
_if you want to fully satisfy any individual and their wishes, you'll have to satisfy them all._
Again with the strawman.. And that statement is logically false. To help you..
If you want to have one gunman, then everyone has to have a gun.
If you want everyone to have a heart transplant, then you'll have to give everyone a heart transplant.
_Everything else would be discrimination_

I believe that that thoughts should be free, "libres". To produce a person is a hard work. I hope we are past the time the argument was used to justify owning persons. I also believe that parents and jurnalist should be paid.

Your audience is not Mastodon. Stop overgeneralizing your biased opinion with such a very limited interaction that you had compared to the whole Mastodon.
The reason might be that the people in your audience on Mastodon are not those who pay for subscription-based news websites. Get to know them instead of blaming them.

oh no, only just found your account and wanted to follow your work, but doing so just as you're leaving! Sorry to hear.
In general, I agree that people should keep many grumbles to themselves. If not happy with someone content, just politely and quietly unfollow.
