I'm looking into #Friendica at the moment. Any tips for new users that folks could share? I see some "big" servers accepting new accounts, are there any suggestions on that? What phone app is good to use for it?

I have a group of 10-20 folks from #BC in #Canada that I might be able to convince to leave Facebook if the alternative is reasonably easy to implement. They want to still be able to interact as a group.

Suggestions are welcomed!

Feel like the best way to do Mastodon is with the browser interface on Firefox for desktop and Android or some other privacy focused browser. Heard the duckduckgo browser for iPhone works pretty well.

@neutron_chick ive been thinking about creating a new instance in my local irl community/town for those looking to flee all the corporate hateful social medias. Im hoping this is a start of better adoption of mastodon/fediverse by the non-typical user and taking back our data.

For apps I have been using “Ice Cubes” and loving it, especially over the default app which made me not want to engage. :(

@neutron_chick If people depend hard on phone apps, if they aren't willing to use any Web interface in any browser, and if nobody knows what a progressive Web is, then Friendica is without any competition. There's better Facebook replacement than Friendica, but it's more complex and harder to get into, and there are no phone apps for it.

Recommended phone app for Friendica would be RaccoonForFriendica.

Also, those who have made it over may want to join the Friendica group Facebook Refugees.

Lastly, remember: All this is the Fediverse. Friendica and Mastodon aren't two separate networks, they are bidirectionally connected and federated.

@neutron_chick I’d suggest using it for a while. I have tried friendica a few times and always abandoned it. In has a lot of weird quirks that you can only discover by using it for a while.

As it’s still Activity Pub, you can follow all the same accounts you do now so its not too hard to take for a test run.

I think it’s only attraction is that it’s more lightweight than Mastodon so it’s cheaper to run an instance.
