Hi, I previously had another account I posted with here under the same name, I had created a Hubzilla tutorial for new users

I had just gotten started with Hubzilla and trying to work to get people over, I hadn't had a chance to clone, and...... the server appears to have gone out. It's been weeks/a month or so.

Is there a way to recover my old account? Am I starting over and just got really unlucky about a host dying out so quickly? (I did check user count, uptime, etc when choosing)? Whats your suggestion for cloning accounts/ working with new users about that? (Given I might be teaching family members)

For another time I strongy advice to do some researches about the hub provider and its administrator before building up your channel, profile and connections seriously. This is valid for any Fediverse service by the way.
Here's the draft of the user guide I wrote for the hubzilla.org website, dealing with this topic:

It may take some time to find the Hubzilla server (hub) you trust to be sure your data is safe. Best is if you know the administrator's character and how he works.

If you don't know a hub administrator, you can start as a user on a public server to test its functionalities, while being still careful with your sensitive data and complying with the terms of service, indicated under the page /TermsOfService of a hub, i.e. hubzilla.org/TermsOfService.

Make some considerations before choosing a server:

    Which release version do you want to test? For the latest release see zotlabs.org/channel/hubzilla-announcements. The version of a hub is indicated on its page /siteinfo, i.e. hubzilla.org/siteinfo
    Beside the built-in protocol Zot, do you want to test other protocols? The provided protocols by a hub are again listed on its page /siteinfo.
    Which apps do you want to test? Hubs usually provide only a specific set of apps. These are listed on the page /siteinfo.json of any hub, i.e. hubzilla.org/siteinfo.json.

Following two websites provide sortable tables for the location of the hubs, their release version or their openness to registration:

    hubzilla.fediverse.observer (contains also infos about the protocols the hubs use ?!)
    the-federation.info/hubzilla

You also find a list of hubs which are open for registrations under

    the page /pubsites of any Hubzilla server, for example hubzilla.org/pubsites
    the page /sites?project=hubzilla of any Zap server, for example z.macgirvin.com/sites?project=hubzilla

With setting up a clone, you become independent of the hub provider /admin, but the provided data are still at his/her mercy to a certain extent. So choose wisely

I had the same thing happen to me when I first discovered Hubzilla in 2019 -- the server I picked died in about 6 weeks.

I would consider running your own hub since you're bringing in family/friends. Any third party hub is never guaranteed.

That should not be considered as an indicator of unstability. Number of users and stability are not related.
If some hubs are in your inner selection, try to contact their admins, ask them about their commitment (what's their purpose to run that hub, how do they get a remuneration for their commitment etc.), observe their communication style (how do they announce updates and changes concerning their hubs, how do they deal with user support request and so on)...

Running a good public hub is a tough job, so I'm not surprised the options are limited. It seems node9 is working for you, so just remember to take frequent backups. I'd create a clone too.

This does not necessarily mean dying, there is just something wrong on the server, I suspect the file system where the database is stored has run out of space. At keast that would be the first place for me to check.
Or the database is not running.
Neither have I got no link to the hub, nor do I know who the admin is. This is just guessing.

I know that as you are not the admin it is of only limited use to you. But maybe the admin happens to read this somehow (cloning) and gets an idea where to look first, or others who may see this on their site will vaguely remember this and therefore have an easier time to find the issue.
I certainly did not know that this was already for a month ... which certainly reduces the hope that the admin even cares for their hub and may just delete it.

I'm sure that, say, your grandma would like it there - The admins are a just as friendly bunch as they are professional (some are IT professionals who developed how to optimize the load on their servers). One of them (@Mark Nowiasz) also runs the hub "https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu" which is the largest public instance of the Zot network (at least to my knowledge). I think grandmas and other new users need such reliable places to save them from the frustrations you encountered. Kudos to you for keeping going after challanging experiences with your first public hub account!
