If you want to set up a Fediverse group (a.k.a., "Public Forum") on Friendica, follow these steps:

1. Create an account on Friendica. I prefer doing this on https://venera.social/

2. Go to Settings > Advanced account types

3. Select "Community Forum" (a.k.a., group). Make sure Public forum is selected.

4. Click "Save settings".

@dragfyre I've never used chirp or gup.pe, but the reason I chose Friendica is because:

1. You can moderate them
2. It looks somewhat similar to Facebook Groups
3. It supports threaded conversations
4. It's got a lot of other goodies supported by Friendica

If you create a Fediverse group, Mastodon will label the account as a Group.

Although Mastodon itself doesn't support groups yet, it is nice that you can use groups *with* Mastodon by tagging the group.

I also want to point out that @Gargron is working on group support for Mastodon, and it does seem to be a high priority.

If you prefer Mastodon because you like it, it might be worth waiting for this feature.

But if you can't wait and you need to set up a group right now, it's great that the Fediverse gives you options!

There's lots of Fediverse server software that supports group that are usable with Mastodon. Off the top of my head, Some of them are:

1. Chirp
2. Gup.pe
3. Lemmy

I use Friendica for Groups because it seems to be the most mature option with the most robust feature set.

Gup.pe is centralised because there is exactly one instance. Friendica is fully decentralised, and you can create forums on any instance that allows you to register an account.

Friendica groups can be read without joining them first. Gup.pe groups can't.

Friendica groups allow the pre-joining post backlog to be read. Gup.pe groups don't.

Friendica groups have to be created manually as user accounts. This means there's always at least one human behind each group which means Friendica groups can be moderated directly from within by users with special privileges. AFAIK, additional moderations can be appointed. None of this applies to gup.pe groups which are created automatically.

Private Friendica groups with limited access are possible. The same isn't possible on gup.pe.

Gup.pe only lists 50 groups. Friendica lists all of them.

As another data point -
The Streams repository supports public, private, and moderated groups. Groups can be added to your existing login account and managed from there. Moderators can be on remote streams (or hubzilla) instances for single click access, or you can use the guest pass app to give a moderator link to somebody on Mastodon (for instance). Group members *may* also have write access to the group calendar and cloud storage (like photo albums). Group content may be publicly searchable, if desired. Or not.

@atomicpoet /kbin received an update yesterday that also supports groups, including moderated ones - like @fediverse.

I'm still working on the server and a guide for admins, but in a few days I'll probably be able to launch the instance for good.
