URLs from Hubzilla are prefixed with #^ special bookmark characters on Mastodon

As per the title, if I put a link in my post in Hubzilla, it is automatically made bookmarkable and displayed with a little bookmark icon. It seems the #^ bookmark characters used for this are added to the underlying post content. Those characters are appearing on Mastodon in front of the links.

As a workaround, it looks like the bookmark characters (and perhaps functionality) are not added to the underlying post content or displayed on Mastodon if you put the links into posts manually, using the [url] BBCode notation.

Is there something I'm doing incorrectly that is causing this to happen? Or a better way to avoid it?

It's definitely possible. I think that problem with the hashtags is on their side. But I don't know where they would be getting the #^ from if it wasn't coming from here.

Am wondering if it's not being stripped out of the post content before the post is sent via the ActivityPub app/interface to Mastodon. I guess that won't be trivial to do if it's actually added to the content permanently here... but perhaps it could be detected and removed only if it's used immediately before the url BBCode tag, or something like that, rather than trying to entirely restructure how bookmarks work.

I don't know the ActivityPub protocols well enough to know where the problem is likely to be, unfortunately.

As #^ is only interpreted by hubzilla I find it normal to delete it before sending it to other social networks. Personally I remove it manually.

It's good that it can be removed manually, as a temporary workaround. For a lot of people, even the idea of having to use BBCode would be off-putting, though.
