@alttexthalloffame I do not, but I always add alt-text for those who do. My old account had a large following and several who needed it, so I was sure to always add it. Most media doesn't take much effort. Also there is a tool to read the text in memes, so that helps a lot.

But i also say, i totally wish we could abandon "alt" Text and instead make people write a full description in the "main" Text

@alttexthalloffame @ton The main benefit of Alt Text (for folks who don’t RELY on it to “see” images they can’t see) is to add a much longer description of what you’re trying to communicate. My instance limits me to 500 characters and sometimes my image needs to say more.

@alttexthalloffame @blogdiva Yes, other. For a few, different reasons but no one else has mentioned this yet: No alt text means I can't/won't share the content (unless I have time to add an [#]Alt4You reply or someone else has already done so). So I do rely on it from that perspective.

@alttexthalloffame I'm going to interpret "rely on" as "usually/always read" -- I will always check out the alt-text because sometimes it has useful information that's not mentioned in the post nor obvious from the image, but "rely on" seems like an overstatement of the situation.

Only thing I wish that was there would be a “good alt text” button for people. Not because they owe me *anything*, but because I’d like to know if anyone reads the ones I write.

@Alt Text Hall of Fame When I check alt-text at all, it's to see how others write it. It can help me extrapolate what kinds of image descriptions Mastodon wants with what kinds of visual details in it. Mastodon still seems to love long and detailed alt-texts whereas the whole rest of the Fediverse doesn't care for image descriptions at all.

But I think the last new thing I've picked up from other users' alt-texts is the camera position and angle which I only put into the long description, and that was a while ago.

@alttexthalloffame I particularly appreciate it when people post alt text with meme images or pictures of people who are supposedly famous - fedi is so international/multicultural that you’re pretty much guaranteed to encounter someone who has no clue what is going on - alt text helps everyone enjoy ?

@alttexthalloffame Sometimes, images load slowly, because I don’t want to pay for a bigger Mastodon server. Alt text lets me decide if I want to wait for the image, or keep scrolling.
