I’m familiar with sharing from Mastodon to Lemmy, but I don’t know much about how to target platforms outside of that.

I don’t think there is an equivalent of Boosting or Sharing on here. Those functions don’t really match the format of these platforms, since content is promoted in feeds/communities with the upvotes (favourites) and posts are placed in communities rather than user profiles

For most parts of the #Fediverse you don't need to do something special. But it helps, i f you don't include special stuff like polls.
In addition, this account is bridged via #BridgyFed to #Bluesky, where one can interact with it, too.

I plan to analyse from which software #Mastodon sees the boosts, but it seems like that will look like:

@Martin Holland I'd post a screenshot from Hubzilla. But for one, writing an adequate image description for it is too much of a hassle for me right now. And besides, it would include an eye contact trigger, and Hubzilla has no way of making Mastodon blank sensitive images out.

Even at the third attempt, it's almost only #Mastodon, from where I see shares. But that again just underscores the dominance of Mastodon. (To be clear, there are others, but I don't see them here)

I think, that's it for me with trying to get a post get a substancial amount of interactions from the rest of the #Fediverse. But that still were some fun little experiments showing the diversity of the software connected in the Fediverse.

@Martin Holland On the one hand, depending on the source, some 70% of all monthly active Fediverse users are on Mastodon. On the other hand, Mastodon feels like at least 95% of all posts that occur there come from within Mastodon. This has a bunch of reasons.

First, people who aren't on Mastodon usually don't act as if they were. They don't adhere to the very common Mastodon-centric variant of the Fediquette. This goes from unashamedly posting over 500 characters at once to making use of text formatting, bullet-point lists etc. to not providing Mastodon-style content warnings and adding well over four hashtags to support their own style of content warnings.

To Mastodon users who aren't used to the Fediverse being more than Mastodon, this is deeply disturbing. In fact, I know a Friendica user who was blocked by a Mastodon user because the latter was so stuck in her belief that the Fedierse is only Mastodon that she took Friendica for an evil black-hat hacker tool and that Friendica user's presence as a nefarious attack on her.

I guess non-Mastodon users who don't behave like Mastodon users are about as likely to be muted or outright blocked as they are to be followed which doesn't do their reach good. I guess there are even entire and not exactly small Mastodon instances that enforce their own rules by blocking "misbehaving" non-Mastodon users instance-wide.

Second, vice-versa, not few non-Mastodon users put a distance between themselves and Mastodon due to how ignorant and obnoxious the "Mastodon = Fediverse" and "Mastodon should be Fediverse" crowds are. Look around Friendica and see how many users hold a grudge against Mastodon for the behaviour of many of the Twitter refugees. Some Hubzilla and (streams) users even raise the drawbridges to keep Mastodon out: The latter turn ActivityPub off entirely, the former refrain from turning it on in the first place. At least Hubzilla users can alternatively connect to Friendica using the diaspora* protocol.

Third, there are generally project-related bubbles. For example, Misskey is fairly big. Why isn't this size felt in activity on Mastodon? Because it's particularly big in its homeland, Japan, and generally in East Asia. Cultural differences, language differences, the lack of East Asian and particularly Japanese Mastodon users in comparison with the wealth of Misskey users from the same area and the immense differences in time zones make connecting to Mastodon unattractive.

The Forkeys tend to form their own bubbles, especially for trans users and their friends and allies. After all, there have been two Forkeys inspired by Blåhaj. And if you're amongst your own ilk, you can get away with turning and leaving "Speak as cat" on because so do the others.

Friendica is its own bubble due to its age, its long-lived, individual culture and the way it's different from most of the rest of the Fediverse, particularly Mastodon. See above. Hubzilla and (streams) form a common bubble, shared not only by nomadic identity, but also because (streams) is too small for its own bubble, so it latches onto its ancestor where next to everyone knows about it anyway. Again, both are too different from Mastodon for many to even bother. In parts, these two bubbles intersect.

I've even got the impression that users of Pleroma and Akkoma feel more attracted to Friendica than to Mastodon because, frankly, these two are closer to the former than to the latter. All three still carry their StatusNet heritage.

Well, and then there's federation with Lemmy. This goes without explanation, I guess. It's almost a miracle that a Twitter clone and a Reddit clone federate at all.

And so, fourth, Mastodon develops its own bubbles within a greater bubble, partly due to how all the other projects' cultures are too different from Mastodon's, but even more due to lack of exposure. There are Mastodon accounts with hundreds of followed actors, every last one of which is on vanilla Mastodon. There are people with hundreds of connections who have joined Mastodon in late October or November, 2022, and who are still fully convinced that the Fediverse is 100% only Mastodon because they've never even come across a post that struck them as not quite looking like a Mastodon toot.

Lemmy overtakes Mastodon!

(at least, when I treat Upvotes as Faves and count them directly in #Lemmy, as opposed to via the API from #Mastodon) Quite a lot of ifs, I know. But at least I found an aspect of the interactions with this post, that is not totally dominated by #Mastodon. ?
