One thing to consider that isn't often mentioned: if you don't feel like or are incapable of typing alt text - post toots without images.

If you think it's acceptable for blind & low vision folks to go without access to the image, then it's fine for everyone to go without.

You can simply toot your toot, leave the image off. I honestly do this a fair amount of the time when I'm too exhausted to create a good image description.

Also, very often you can simply delay posting an image if you don't have the time or energy to write alt text right this second. I do this fairly often when I'm in a flare up and brain fog is making it hard.

@meganL sometimes I’ll write up the post and add the photo and then just post it as a private post so I can come back to add alt text and post it properly later. Its’s kind of like a draft post in the absence of real drafts here.

@Megan Lynch (she/her) This is close to what I already do.

In fact, when I have an idea for a picture, I go through the image description in my head, then I look at the scenery, then I go through the image description in my head again with the scenery before my eyes. And when I hit obstacles while trying to describe the scenery in my head, I decide against both creating the image and writing the image post in the first place.

This is why I usually try my best to avoid e.g. having buildings in my images, especially, but not only realistic buildings. Having to describe them is actually worse than having to describe space nebulae, and I have described space nebulae before. I avoid space pictures in my images now as well.

For me, it isn't about having some alt-text for an image because any alt-text is allegedly better than none. It's about having a pair of descriptions for each image that are as informative, accurate and thus useful as I can possibly write them.
