UN charter says as much.

The population of an occupied territory has a right to defend itself against the occupiers.

Israel always argues that they have a right to their own country where they can live in peace and security. I agree with them, but the Palestinians also have the same right and it is being denied to them. Such a right applies to everyone.

Ethnostates are icky. Especially modern-era artificial ones.

Of course, the flip side of the coin is that a right to defend oneself doesn't extend to attacking noncombatants.

(I would have said civilians, but armed settler activists blur that line to a dangerous degree)
