I noticed both Geert Wilders (PVV) & Caroline van der Plas (BBB) still block me on Twitter. Both are elected representatives & party leaders of parties that make up the Dutch cabinet. Years ago both blocked me directly after quote-tweeting me.

Makes me wonder: should elected representatives be able to block citizens on social media? For government officials it's easy but for representatives I find it difficult to make up my mind. What do you think?

@Pepijn They definitely should. Maybe you said something reasonable and they blocked you out of spite, but for many (especially non-cis-white-male) elected representatives, public platforms like Twitter would be completely unusable without the ability to block abusive people in their mentions.

1/2 Side-note to all who are eager for #mastodon to implement quote toots: try getting quote-tooted/tweeted by someone with a large passionate following.

Bonus if your account is identifiable to your real identity.

The week after some US TV host quote-tweeted me even my employers IT department ended up knowing about it. So did my mom. And so did the Dutch police. It wasn't fun.

If Mastodon implements quote stuff I hope it is done with consideration for power imbalances.

- implement functionality where the quoted person can reply to the quote-toot. And make that reply as visible as the quote-toot (so top level, and without an extra click).

- implement functionality that blocking a person makes the quote-toot they made go away.

- implement functionality where a user can decided whether they allow their (individual) toots to be quoted.

@Pepijn if they do implement it, I hope that there’s a setting to prevent your stuff from being “quote tooted” and also a way to block any quote toots from appearing in your timelines.

One, the Fediverse is not only Mastodon. And the Fediverse isn't entirely built against Mastodon either.

Two, just about everything else that can do microblogging in any shape or form already has quote-posts implemented. Only Mastodon doesn't. Some of these implementations are older than Mastodon itself.

This means: Even if you opt out of being quote-postable on Mastodon, this will only have an effect within Mastodon itself. But if I should receive one of your posts here on Hubzilla which has absolutely nothing to do with Mastodon, Mastodon will not make the "Share" button disappear from my menu, and I will still be able to quote-post you with exactly zero problems.

Maybe Mastodon will hide my quote-post from you. Maybe it won't, and I know from personal experience that Mastodon users are notified when I quote-post them. But it can't keep me here on Hubzilla from creating a quote-post of any of your posts or comments.

Nor can it keep anyone on Misskey, Firefish, Iceshrimp, Sharkey, Catodon, Friendica etc. etc. from quote-posting you.

@Phil This could happen more quickly than you imagine.

Hubzilla, which is where I post from, didn't have boosts until a few months ago, and Hubzilla will be 10 years old next year. Quote-posts were the only way at all to share messages on Hubzilla until then.

On Misskey as well as its many forks, quote-posts are just as much and as firmly part of the culture as content warnings in the summary field on Mastodon.

And nobody in either place checks where a post came from before quote-posting it.

...then Mastodon was screwed over the very moment it was launched.

Mastodon has never been un-quote-post-able. From the very moment that Mastodon started to exist, it was possible to quote-post Mastodon toots with zero resistance.

Quote posts were introduced to the Fediverse in July, 2010 with the launch of Mistpark which is Friendica now. That was almost six years before Mastodon was launched.

The very moment that Mastodon was launched, it immediately federated with Friendica as well as with Hubzilla which has had quote posts since 10 months before Mastodon was launched.

The very moment that Mastodon was launched, it was quote-post-able. Not from within Mastodon itself, but from Friendica and from Hubzilla.

If Mastodon becoming quote-post-able means that Mastodon is being screwed over, then Mastodon was screwed over when it was created.

But what or rather who actually got screwed over were millions of Twitter refugees who learned that the Fediverse is Mastodon and only Mastodon and nothing else and thus had no quote-posts. This was told or at least implied to them by people who either thought themselves that the Fediverse is only Mastodon, or who tried to simplify the on-boarding process by simplifying their explanation of the Fediverse.

Thousands upon thousands of Mastodon users spontaneously shat bricks into their pants when they encountered a "toot" with over 500 characters for the first time because they had "known" that this was absolutely impossible until one second earlier.

And thousands upon thousands of Mastodon users spontaneously shat bricks into their pants when they encountered a quote-post for the first time because they had "known" that this was absolutely impossible until one second earlier.

If you're looking for something that's guaranteed to be absolutely, definitely, 100% un-quote-post-able, you may want to leave the Fediverse right now.

The Fediverse has quote-posts. Mastodon is quote-post-able, and it won't be able to do anything against it. Sorry, but that's a fact.

Maybe this is a little consolation: In 14 years of quote-post availability on Friendica, in nine years of quote-post availability on Hubzilla, and in all the years that quote-posts were available on Misskey and its many forks, they have never been used to harass anyone.
