Fun poll. I like how you distinguish between explaining and nagging. ?
I don't remember specifically how I learned about the importance of alt text, but I do remember tech being a big hurdle on the free web interface. The input process was *awful.* IIRC the text box only fit about a dozen words at a time, and you couldn't even see the image you were describing.
I ended up paying for an app because it was so miserable trying to do alt text on the free service. Hopefully it's better now.

For me, it was the combination of culture (from Day 1, my feed was gently pro-alttext) and tooling; Masto is the first software I've used that made alt texting images easy and a firsy-class part of the flow.

I was using alt text on my Wordpress blog before I came to Mastodon so I put that under "general knowledge" (I also had a colleague who did QA on front ends, who educated me about a lot of accessibility issues).
That said, another big motivator for me is that I actually enjoy writing alt text. As an amateur writer, I find it to be excellent practice for writing descriptive prose.

I’ve been learning a lot about the importance of accessibility, how it benefits everybody. IMO we gain from making things accessible to disabled people so they can participate, but it helps to know that (e.g.) something like a ramp provides almost immediate benefit to us all

Already knew about it from way, way back, when I learned HTML in the days of dial-up, and not being able to load images was business as usual. ? What made me use it on social media? Realizing it's the same for many people as captions on video are for me, that is, absolutely necessary for understanding. I can't expect accessibility for me if I'm not willing to offer it to others.

I became aware of 508 issues through work. I saw that alt text was a thing talked about on Mastodon and started doing it. I feel guilty when I don't write alt text so if I am not in the mood I just don't post images to Mastodon. That usually happens with infographics and visual humor where I would have to write a lot to make the image worthwhile.

I have a lot of muted words to try to avoid a very triggering topic, and if an image has alt text, it gets muted, too. So in addition to everything else, I’m extending that same courtesy to others who are avoiding things for their own mental health.
I also find it a really useful writing exercise, and it makes me slow down and think about what I’m trying to communicate with the image. I also did alt text for Looptober; describing music was a real interesting challenge.

another, missing reason -- Mastodon made it easier to do, gave us edit buttons so I could add it afterwards when I forgot, and made other people's alt text visible so I could see what was good alt text (or not). Twitter for some bizarre reason didn't do any of those things.

My mastodon client complains if I don't. Mentally it's easier to fill out the alt text than to intentionally skip it. I'd rather do it right than wrong but still need the reminder/nudge.
It's not so much that I didn't think it was worthwhile but that it wasn't top of mind and once I hit "post" or "share", I stop actively thinking about it myself and never think to go back again.

back in the day, there were so many online services that were slow-loading & people would never see your images but they could see the bit of alt-text telling you what the bit of image was supposed to be so i'd make up alt text as a matter of course
so i used to do it all the time in the way back...
later i found several good reasons to keep using alt text including accessibility, keywording, putting in jokes that were too hard to put into 500 characters etc.

But I can pinpoint what exactly got me to stop keeping it at short visual descriptions in alt-text and instead start writing these extensive, highly detailed, highly explanatory monsters that don't fit into alt-text anywhere anymore.

Aside from accessibility, I find alt text very useful for understanding what an image/gif/video is meant to convey (especially reactions/memes), since it's not always clear at first glance.
Likewise, when I post reaction gifs, I do my best to describe the important parts of it visually, and what I mean by it.

I started doing it because it was the norm here. In part because of the nagging, in part because it is a nice thing to do, in part because if I can't be bothered to write an alt text, the post is itself is probably too frivolous.
I was completely sold when I learned Mastodon's translate function also translates the alt text, translating memes without doing OCR or anything fancy. You don't even need to have impaired vision for alt text to be useful!
