Okie Fedi, I'm gonna be a bitch.
My partner's neurodivergence makes it basically impossible for her to like, make alt text. She is also an artist and enjoys photography, but the Fedi's "no alt no like, no alt no boost" stuffs makes her feel excluded and less. And that's before the harassment and the smarmy reply guys "actually" her.
Aside from the blatantly abelist stuffs, one super common response is that she should use Alt4Me to participate. Okie cool. A way to get help!
But does it work?
No. No it does not.
I did a quick search of the Alt4Me hashtag. Of the 17 uses I saw in the last 5 days on mastodon.social:
11 posts got no help
3 posts got help
2 posts were telling ppl to use the hashtag
1 post was complaining abt ppl not using provided alts.
Tbh? That is kind of fked.
Fedi u aren't inclusive if u make systems to help ppl and u don't do the work to actually help. It makes it easier to say "lol we tried" IG, but it still leaves ppl without help... and IG gives preachy bullies another took to use to harass the ppl the tools are built for.
"But we have a tag for that, use it!"
