just got an instance of Hubzilla up+running a few days ago + am still trying to find my way around.

So far I seem to have been unable to find good guides on how to
- install / change theme/s
- install add-ons
Can you point me towards any noob-level documentation, perhaps?

On a related note + seeing that the /help/de-de/ pages coming with the install are still in their original English version/s: is there a way to change that?

- install add-ons

Installing the official addons is in the admin guide in the help files:

cd mywebsite
util/add_addon_repo https://framagit.org/hubzilla/addons.git hzaddons

After you install them, you still have to activate them from /admin/addons

The process is the same for other addon repositories, you would just have to replace the repository URL (the part of the above command ending in .git) and the repository name ("hzaddons" in the above command.)

- install / change theme/s

In theory, the process is similar to installing addons, only you would use util/add_theme_repo instead. Right now, though, there don't seem to be any themes that are supported by the current version of Hubzilla (5.0 and up), at least none that I have found.

Hello @Tanja + mayn thanks for getting back to me re my question.

I have no access to execute shell command line/s on the host I'm on. Also, I have never worked with .git before. Is there perhaps another way of accomplishing the described? i.e. could I manually download the repository from https://framagit.org/hubzilla/addons.git and re-upload it to ... where? I did a brief check on the directory structure but at first glance, none seem to suggest themselves.

My level of competence ends somewhere in the area of setting up and maintaining Wordpress' instance :/ - a miniscule sliver of hope is offered by the fact that I'm on a cpanel driven environment that offers also somethign called "Git™ Version Control" (Version 82), but if I'm reading https://docs.cpanel.net/cpanel/files/git-version-control/ correct, there are some limitations in effect which may render this moot for the purposes pursued here.

For completeness' sake allow me to mention that on my cpanel, the mentioned "Terminal" interface appears to not be on offer.

This is going to make things difficult. Command line access is a requirement, and I don't know if it's possible at all to do all the things that need to be done.

For one thing, there is a cron job that needs to be run regularly, although I suppose you could use web cron service for that.

You also install updates via a command located in the util directory.

The script I mentioned downloads the addon repository to /hubzilla_root/extend/addon and then creates symbolic links in /hubzilla_root/addon. It may be possible to upload the addons directly to the latter location. Otherwise, I don't know if it's possible to create symlinks via FTP, I never had reason to try.

Hubzilla is more complicated than that...

As for CPanel, I have absolutely no experience with it. I have my hub and other self-hosted services on my home server, and on a VPS with full command line access, so it's not something I need.

i was able to setup a cron job as required per cpanels cron applet, so that's covered;
also I seem to be in a streak of luck re updates, since those are handled by a Scriptaculous instance they got going there.

That's valuable information. :) Since both these directories don't exist (yet).
I will give your (implied) ;) suggestion an attempt, but this may take a wee while, given real world obligations and all that otherworldly stuff.

For the moment: thank you very much the pointers so far. I will report back once I had a chance to give it a whirl.

just to rule out the obvious: what would happen if I simply rote the command line into a cron job?
