Is there a document giving the major difference between Hubzilla and Zap?

Can we migrate from Hubzilla to Zap without loosing the Hubzilla domain? For eg. my Hubzilla domain is pod.datamol.org, I want to migrate to Zap on pod.datamol.org?

Given that the next version of Hubzilla will be upgraded to the new zot6, is there even a need to switch? I am partially wondering as well, always seemed to me like Zap is more of a move fast and break things version of Hubzilla, with the good stuff making its way into normal Hubzilla sooner or later.

I don't have any current plans to backport all of this work to Hubzilla, but I could probably point others to the relevant code and provide implementation details if they wanted to do so.

Hubzilla is a decentralised content management system developed mostly between 2012-2015 (before ActivityPub was even a thing). It uses XML-based ActivitystreamsV1 for object storage and traditional Zot as primary transport.

Zap is a social networking app from 2019-2020 and uses ActivityStreams JSON-LD for object storage and Zot6 as primary transport.

These are the major reasons the two applications aren't directly compatible. They both evolved from the same code repository, but migrating between the two is sort of like trying to mate a butterfly and a cobra. They aren't the same species and have evolved independently in completely different evolutionary environments.

@Anmol Sharma @poVoq Zap does not use tags or even versioning (beyond supplying a timestamp). You have a choice of master and dev branches. That's it.

@Anmol Sharma @poVoq The server rewrite rules are different. In Hubzilla you'd rewrite to

https://my.site/index.php?q=blahblah

In Zap you need

https://my.site/index.php?req=blahblah

PHP version requirement is 7.x although IIRC 7.0 is end-of-life.

Thanks for the answers. One last thing, is /cache is required in the Zap directory and if yes, should it be backed up while upgrading from fresh sources so that it can be restored to the fresh source?

@Anmol Sharma @poVoq Yes and yes - although if you upgrade in place via git you don't really need to back it up. Only if you're copying the distribution from a separate staging area.

By change any of the following points is possible?

If I started a Zap account along side Hubzilla. Is it possible to transfer my contacts and posts from Hubzilla to Zap.
If I want to install Zap keeping the domain same on which Hubzilla is installed on, then deleting Hubzilla after fresh installing Zap. Can I import my Hubzilla account to Zap.

@Anmol Sharma Maybe I am wrong, but I think you have to wait for zot6 support in Hubzilla for nomadic identity working accross to Zap.

Let's simplify. Cloning a channel between these two completely different platforms is not possible at this time.

- It may be possible at some future date.
- It may not.
