Then I came back in 2022 like so many others.

Ran my own instance for a couple of years and eventually gave that up for various reasons.

I migrated from no social media. I thought the Fediverse ideals and the federation was something I could deal with.

But then I had the alpha version of Diaspora so probably more like 2009. Still have the CD in my cupboard.

It was november 2019, I was saying on twitter that private social networks were not public town squares so they could totally ban whoever broke their Term Of Services, even the President.
I said I wanted portability and federation, like old usenet, or irc days
Someone pointed me to mastodon, and I found it cool, but I didn't stick around for more than a couple of month.
Lack of content.

I came back with the migration of november 2022 even though I thought that people were trying it for the wrong reason, exaggerating possible Musk impact and underestimating the importance of portability and federation.

I was partially wrong

@cliffwade I have an account on Photog.Social that I can trace back to 2017, but my first account was on mastodon.rocks , possibly 2016.
There were some of us looking for a new home once it became obvious that G+ was being unsettled before closing - we toyed with the idea of an elgg server, but then discovered things like Friendica and Hubzilla, and tried those out before finally styling on Mastodon, back when it still used OStatus rather than ActivityPub.
