Still pretty much torn about parts of the current #IndieWeb movement. While I definitely applaud some of the ideas and approaches, it sometimes has a difficult feel of "write-only" networking to it. Just like back then with all of us hiding behind our RSS feeds, maybe counting whether or not someone viewed our stuff but not really being into much reading of stuff published by others or wanting, digging into incoming interaction. Not sure this always is a good thing... but maybe I'm too pessimistic here.

@z428 I think part of the problem is that is is still too hard to have a two-way communication. Most sites do not support web mentions, for example. We are nowhere near how easy it is on traditional social media.

@Henrik Jernevad Yes, definitely so. But in some ways ... it almost feels like there's quite a crowd even retreating to that very idea and considering this a "better" approach to handle things. Which sometimes feels confusing as one might end up commenting or otherwise interacting with posts and never really get any feedback on comments, not even knowing whether it's been seen at all.

@z428 I think there are a lot of advantages to a distributed model. Concentrating "all" human interaction into the hands of a few corporations just feels bad. Without being too political, I think it is something like a democracy versus autocracy. And the Churchill quote about democracy being the worst form of government except for all those other forms that have been tried, applies to this situation too.

@Henrik Jernevad Generally agree, the only thing I am unsure however is complexity and resource consumption of the current federation model. Like, having a plethora of (most likely poorly optimized) hardware or virtual systems, and a communication model that is essentially about every system broadcasting its stuff to virtually every other system. That seems... concerning in many ways and not something that scales rather well. And "feedback" (including responses, reactions, ...) somehow is included in that problem, as complexity, servers blocking each other, or servers simply implementing different feature sets make the original problem worse. At times, it really feels like despite all "social" features, the only somewhat reliable way of using these networks is write-only and hoping that people that matter to you will have a chance to see what you wrote, knowing there's absolutely no way to ensure that (or even to learn whether this doesn't work as expected...).

@z428 I agree that it is an imperfect/ineffective system as you say. I'm still in "worst way we've tried apart from all the other ones" territory. And to be fair, posting something I n Twitter could be quite "lonely" as well. It was quite likely for a new account not get any reaction at all. So, the hard question, how can we make the system better?
