Are there any sets where you don’t start the design skeleton at common, I.e. commander legends, planechase, master sets (sets built focused on cards in higher rarities)?

Are there any sets where you don’t start the design skeleton at common, I.e. commander legends, planechase, master sets (sets built focused on cards in higher rarities)?

We start design by coming up with the larger themes and mechanics. Usually when we start putting the set together, we begin by making the commons. A mechanic working at common is usually a good sign that it will fit the structure of a set.

What happens if a player steals a Contraption with an effect like Steal Artifact that doesn’t reassemble it? Does it stay on the original controller’s sprocket and never trigger (because the controller isn’t the one cranking it)? Does it move to the new controller’s same-numbered sprocket? Do they get to pick a sprocket for it?

Hi Mark! Can I request some birthday trivia about Chandra and/or Nissa?

Nissa started as an image for the video game Duels of the Planeswalkers. We then made an elf deck for her to run in the game. The character was popular enough that we made a Magic card for her. Then when we were making the Gatewatch, we chose her as the green representative, as there wasn’t any other good monogreen option.

Weird question, but would Mentor be an acceptable mechanic in blue? The flavor fits great, +1/+1 counters are a common blue archetype, the emphasis on attacking isn’t particularly blue but I don’t think that undercuts any of Blue’s weaknesses, making it a mild bend at worst.

Hi Mark, when making a creature with a popular tribe type (i.e zombies) is it difficult to branch that creature into colors past 2? Humans seem to be capable of all five colors while zombies (just undead humans) have so little representation in 2 and above color variance. Is this trying to limit the tribe from branching out, a flavor choice, etc.?

It’s important to not have the five colors all feel the same, so just like we mechanically isolate things to certain colors, creative defaults certain concepts to certain colors. Creative is a little easily to bleed when the right world comes along though, which is why you get things like white Zombies in Amonkhet.

Happy Friday, Mark! With all the sets featuring Double Faced Cards recently, is R&D less likely to be on the look out for mechanics like Adventure and Aftermath? Though I absolutely love DFCs when I play them out in the wild (Highfives for knocking it out of the park with Battles and MOM in general!) I actively avoid them in my own collection because of various things like the drafting logistics and raw complexity especially for newer players. Fingers crossed for more Adventures in WOE!

We’ll still make single-faced cards that have two cards worth of content. Adventures were much beloved. Aftermath less so, but mostly because people didn’t like the frames. Split cards, in general, are popular.

When (I’m just going with when here) non-siege battles do happen, do you expect them to still be Landscape instead of portrait? Is being landscape planned to be one of the key identifying physical features of Battles as a type?

That card is mostly a black ability.

Hello Mark! I recently build a Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients deck to play planeschase with all my friends but i was wondering, any affect like Wyll, Blade of Frontiers or barbarian class that states specifically “when you roll a die roll two and ignore the lower result” how does that work with the planar die?
